Buckhorn 209 on sale

Rookie question. Is Buckhorn worth trying?
Its a lower fouling, less corrosive powder that has worked well for me. I clean my muzzy with normal smokeless powder solvent (vs water or such) and find it fairly straight forward. But I bought powder before this price increases and don't have a tone of experience with the other black powders to provide any value assessment.

Blackhorn209 is an awesome powder but no longer worth the price. Can not afford to target shoot with it.
When I go to the range I am usually working up loads for at least two different centerfire rifles. I don’t have the time to swab between shots on muzzle loaders. I will most likely shoot a dozen shots or less while hunting. BH 209 is on sale right now for $73 for 8 oz jars. I bought enough for a couple years anyway. The powder is made in Canada so I don’t expect the price or availability to get any better. Most powders are made in Europe or Canada. T7 is made in the USA so I expect that powder to remain a good choice for light to medium heavy weight bullets.

Yeah I think it depends a lot on if you shoot muzzy a lot or not. I shoot muzzy minimally to confirm zero and practice a tad but the vast majority of my rifle practicing is not with a muzzle loader and doesn't need to be. Fundamentals cross over.

Does the Blackhirn truly require a 209 primer for reliable ignition? I have read so on a few forums but no where else.

If anything I was thinking about getting a bottle to have on hand just for the future with the current tariffs. Though the 777 is 2.5x cheaper so I could just stock pile some of it. Ha

I believe so, esp. in colder conditions. Also for my CVAs there is a different breach plug that has a shorter ignition passage (IE has a pocket drilled into it to get the powder closer). Hot 209s are recommended as well, federal 209a being one of the more popular. Do not use "muzzleloader" 209s which are actually not as hot.

I've never had an issue but I have the right breech plug and federal 209a primers.

Federal 209MZ primers are essentially CCI 209M but packaged as Muzzleloader primers. So in general I agree but there is an exception. The 209MZ/CCI209M will work for all intents and purposes in place of a 209A if those can not be found.
