It seems like guys who have this brake like it, but most seem to be using it on X-Bolts. It comes standard on many of the newer models, but it looks like many folks swapped out the old Browning radial brakes for the Recoil Hawg.

A few questions:

Has anyone here used this brake on something other than Browning? If so, how’d you like it?

For the price, what else is comparable? I’m able to scoop a Recoil Hawg for less than $100. I’m okay spending a little more for something noticeably better, but I don’t want to spend $200.

Finally, what’s the real weight on these? Browning lists them at 1.6oz, which sounds great. Is that accurate?

Appreciate the forthcoming info!

I have one on an X-Bolt and one an AR-15. Any gun with a 5/8-24 or 1/2-28 threaded muzzle and a shoulder diameter of .700 will work great. I love them on both guns. I see a huge recoil reduction on both. The AR-15 doesn't recoil or jump whatsoever and is perfect for shooting varmints and watching the impact. I also like that when I am laying prone, there is no gas directed downward and prevents any dust from blowing up. Of course they are loud, but any gun with a muzzle brake is and hearing protection is a must.

Any idea if the 1.6oz weight is accurate?

I have one on my 16" M&P-10 .308. It's pretty light and does fine for recoil (much better than the Surefire Procomp that was on there). Also had a M4-72 on there for a couple of rounds; the M4-72 did a better job of controlling recoil, but I had a lot of gas coming back at my face. Bad enough that my eyes started watering. The M4-72 is now on a Savage in .300wm. I also have an Ultradyne brake but haven't compared it yet. The baffles on the Ultradyne are even steeper than the M4-72 so it'll probably never see use on the 16" AR; I'd have to use the 300wm to compare.

This is my buddy, who normally shoots an AR15, shooting my M&P 10 with the Recoil Hawg brake on there(200yd steel), ammo is either 168gr Hornady Black or 175gr SMK:

For the price, I think it's hard to beat the M4-72 knock-off I've seen on eBay (I think someone in Tennessee makes it). Reports are it performs pretty close to the original but is heavy. The original is around the same price as the Hawg IIRC. The Ultradyne is even heavier/larger. If weight is a concern, then the Browning Recoil Hawg is definitely a consideration. When I first threw it on there, I was surprised at how light it is. If you're concerned about recoil only; I think there are better options.

I just got the browning recoil hawg for my 300 wsm hells canyon. Been looking at them for a while only because we can never have enough toys. This is surprisingly light and went on super easy. Read on a couple sites they back out pretty easy so used a little blue threadlocker to keep it put, only downside I see is increase length ~1.5". Honestly the the radial brake worked really well on this set up with feeling like 6.5 cm, so really looking forward to what it will be like with this thing. Attaching a few pics, one next to another HC with 23" barrel for comparison. 0FB02A0A-5472-45B6-AA70-153702B53938_1_105_c.jpeg6D1C1B5F-FF24-42C3-B064-87E3915A4605_1_105_c.jpeg

Noisy is what to expect.

I have had 2 rifles with the Recoil Hawg, 6.5 Creedmoor, removed one and put it on a shorter lighter suppressor ready rifle, helped dramatically and I was able to see impacts. The drawback was the noise. They will both come off once range work is done. Ironically, both rifles came with the radial brakes that work surprisingly well for being so overbored, but the Recoil Hawg works better.

Yeah kind of figured that about the noise increase. Its my elk gun and the odds of me not having time to put on hearing protection are a lot less than whitetails in the woods.

I have a early version hells canyon speed with radial brake 300wsm anyone know if it fits? Also how much improvement over the radial in recoil reduction worth it?

You most likely have the metric threads, my older Speed has them. Browning is selling a Hawg for them. Yes it made a big difference from the radial brake. I have one on my 300 win and 30 06. Makes both a pleasure to shoot but wear hearing protection!!!!!!

I wonder if the threads will fit the BOSS threads and if it comes in SS. I might get rid of my BOSS and switch over to this design just to get away from the micrometer crap.
