I am considering purchasing a Browning BAR MK4 in .308 .... As a hunting rifle (which will be rare) and to use at the range out to a max of 600 yards

I have heard that BAR rifles are quite reliable, but the accuracy reports have not been so great.

Browning is advertising that the MK4 is more accurate than their prior BAR models ... and I am wondering if anyone has any real world experience with the MK4.

Thanks

I am wondering the same thing. I am looking at the MK4 hunter chambered in 300WM. from what I know so far the barrels are threaded to the receiver on the MK4, whereas the MK3 was bolted to it. So I would imagine that it is considerably more accurate.

Until the fix that trigger and that STUPID “watch screw” scope mount threading (on a radius receiver), I wouldnt buy another.

I have the mk3. Not sure about the barrel being “bolted on” mine appears to be screwed into the action.

My accuracy is about 1.5” at 100 on a good day.

The grip on the gun is a bit “chunky” and needs to be reduced by 20% as well.

It has never jammed on me. So that’s good.

watch screw?
Tiny 2 screws that hold each of your scope mounts onto your receiver that are only good for like 12in/lb (It might be 18 I can’t remember off hand)

They are steel inserts that are pressed into the receiver from the underside and the inserts are only long enough to grab 3 or 4 threads….Terrible design. They should have made the top of the receiver flat and utilized the 4 bolt pattern like the x-bolt.

My father has the last series bar in 308. Beautiful rifle. However, it needs to be sent off to the guy in pa for a trigger job. Accuracy for my father is not consistent, but then again it has an abominably heavy trigger. I want one sometbuht bad, I’ve heard if you get a good one it’s a work of art. I’ve also seen the new ones and I feel the design is too modern for me, I dunno, may be going the bpr

Shit, for whatever reason I thought this was about the lever gun, don’t know much about the bar, but I’m thinking browning bar or bpr in 243

I picked up a BAR DBM 308 last year. It is surprisingly accurate. Shoots MOA or better with a few different factory loads. Trigger is a little weird, but mine came from the factory at 2lbs.

Didn’t realize we were on mk4 cool

I like my mk2 safaris, did have one of the scope mount screws strip but had the smith go up to 8-40 and loctite a pic rail on and that’s worked well

My biggest wish was shims at the stock to receiver junction to give the buttstock a nuetralnor negative slope like the rokstok if I wanted and gas adjustment for a can.

I’m not a huge huge fan of the mark 4 styling. I like my hunting rifles to look traditional, but I also understand I’m not the majority, soooo

I think the MK4s allow you to adjust the gas block

Regarding the "watch screw" comment above ... I believe the new Mk4 DBM model actually has an integrated picatinny rail

I’m just glad that they only included the Picatinny rail on the models with the hideous and completely unnecessary 10 round box magazine sticking out into your back while you’re trying to carry it.

It would be great if they offered a shorter magazine for the DBM model ... which would be flush ... but I don't see one
