I’m looking at spinning a SRS brake on my tikka in 6.5prc. I haven’t shot the gun yet but among many, one big reason for going with 6.5 was recoil.

For that reason I’m thinking hard about which brake I’m going to add. Probably too hard. But - I figured I’d fish for some opinions on here.

A 5 port will start to get long on this 24” barrel. A 3 or 4 port is seeming like the sweet spot of length and recoil reduction. Does each port make a significant reduction in recoil? Or would I likely be just as satisfied with a 2 port as a 5?

I’d really like to spot impacts and have a gun that’s enjoyable to shoot.

Thanks for your insight!

I use the 419 Hellfire 3 port on my 7prc with a 24 inch barrel. It drastically reduces the felt recoil, enough for me spot the majority of shots. I'd imagine it would work great for your 6.5.

Ultimate reloader did a test and concluded that you're gonna see diminishing returns after 3 ports for a softer shooter. 4 ports work better with magnums. I have the pro4 on both a 7RM and 6.5CM. Both are very enjoyable to shoot. If I didn't get a deal on the 6.5mm 4 port, I would have gone 2 or 3.

@hoooogan @annamolly is the concussion and blast noticeable on those brakes? Do you wear plugs or muffs? I find blast much more noticeable with just the earplugs but don't always wear muffs bc it sometimes interferes with the negative comb

Disclaimer: I'm a relatively newer shooter, so I don't have a ton of experience.

I wear plugs. With the 7, it does concuss a bit but that's just the nature of the round. My rifle came with a radial brake, so it's not much different in that regard. You're not really getting directly blasted with gases, so it's really not terrible, but it gets obnoxious in the dirt. I put down a big movers blanket if I'm going prone.

The 6.5 is just mild. She'll still kick up some dust, but that's about it.
