Brake Calipers question

Im not a mechanic, I claim to not be one at all, but, ive made terrible fincial decisions and tend to work on my own vehicle not because I enjoy it.

So. I've got a 17' F250, my front right brake locked up/broke, than the caliber took a shit and puked brake fluid all over the place. I've got to get a new caliper, is it wise to replace the drivers side at the same time? Or as long as everything moves freely and I greese the pistons it'll be alright? Doing the right side brakes, I might as well do the left.

I mean, they aren't that expensive, it's a quick job, and you're going to have to bleed them anyway. Personally I would do it but you said you're on a tight budget...

I'd be more worried about what broke the right caliper. That's a pretty rare event. Did you establish what caused it?

Also, I believe that any brake pads that got brake fluid on them need to be replaced. I don't think you can clean them, they are done/finished/kaput

Not a tight budget, but if I dont have to spend the money I dont want to...

nope, literally had my tires off this morning to swap out my tie rod ends, everything looked fine. Towed a trailer this afternoon, heard grinding, than a pop. Stopped, saw my brake was grinding. Tried to limp it to a spot and went maybe a 1/4 mile, heard a pop, lost brakes and found out that my ebrake still works.

Taking it apart tonight once I get towed.

I've got all new pads and rotors coming. Even if the pads didnt have oil on them, im positive they're still gone just due to the noises I hears.

Guessing the caliper didn't break, but rather pushed the pistons out because the slide pins seized up? I cant think of anything as to why I would replace the other caliper. I would pull the pins and re-lube

I mean that very event could have been the cause. If your brake locked and wouldn't release, and was then forced (when you "limped") against the rotor while locked, it could have put enough sideways force on the caliper to crack it....

I work at a Ford dealer as a PM for the last 24 years and have not heard have the pin bolts just falling out. Maybe blue lock tite

Degrease, Loctite and torque to spec. I’ve been doing my own brakes for a couple of decades and never had one back out.

I would do both, but that’s me. Clean everything up really good and bleed them.

Guys, I think my caliper is fine. Just going to slap some new pads on this sexy beast and call it a day.

Would bet my paycheck that seized pins cause that. See it several times on those Fords. Was driving one of a buddies helping him haul cattle when the pedal went to the floor.

Just pull clean up the other side pins and lube up good. Be like new

I always end up the opposite. When I put them in think "I hope that's tight enough". And when I take them out the next time I am like "who the hell got these so tight"

Sounds good. Never knew of this issue. Think I'd rather deal with dropping the damn tranny on my wrist out of these trucks vs driving down a hill with a trailer and you hear a pop and foot goes to the floor. Needless to say, ebrake works.

Nothing, assuming you torqued them to spec.
