Id eat until I got sick.Probably should be putting a couple springers in the freezer, but when there are springers around, there are more people chasing them, and summer steelhead are just fun (and equally good eating)View attachment 1075600View attachment 1075601

Landed my first brown trout on a fly yesterday.
I dang near strictly fish for catfish. Channel cats to fill the freezer and giant flatheads for fun. I only run a Passive limb line set. 10 foot of 250lb test line with a two ounce barrel sinker attached to a heavy swivel. Then a 9 inch leader and a 8/0 double action hook. I’ll use cut bait or small live bream for bait. But I’ve found bullheadcatfish to be deadly on big flatheads. Plus, the bullheads seem to stay alive in the hook a bit longer.
This isn’t glamorous, it’s generally quite gross and filthy. It isn’t “sporting” and you’re not ripping lips. I do this to fill freezers and take the burden off people I care about. I don’t have a lot of money, otherwise I’d make all my friends and neighbors millionaires. But I have an excessive amount of time and like giving catfish away to people who aren’t able to get on the river.

That’s a pretty fish!View attachment 1075796

That doesn’t sound dumb at all. Brookies are beautiful fish and are a ton of fun to catch. A lot of the small mountain streams I grew up fishing are full of them. The little ones are delicious roasted over a campfire on a willow limb. That’s a pretty fish!
As dumb as it may sound, I really want to do some high elevation mountain stream brook trout fishing someday, they also seem to be beautiful little fish in their natural environment
I have a 3wt and 4wt fly setups when the time comes. I think I’m going to research it a little more and try to make my turkey trip a combo, and find a high mountain stream with a few brookies, it has to exist somewhere in NE OregonThat doesn’t sound dumb at all. That’s going to be a blast on those lightweight rods. I don’t know which part of NE Oregon you turkey hunt but I have a few places I can send you for mountain stream brookies up there.I have a 3wt and 4wt fly setups when the time comes. Catching fish on a fly is way different of an enjoyable experience. I don’t care about size. Just being out there in the streams trying to figure them out is fun. That’s a pretty fish!
