Bow sights?

Good day everyone. I am back once again to seek expert advice on bow sights. I have recently purchased bow #2 (prime) and want to set it up for hunting elk, etc. I already have a bow setup for whitetail but i am sure that i will use both for whitetail and or elk. I live in North Alabama so a lot of my hunting is tree stand hunting and shots are not very far. I don't have a place to really practice long distant shots plus 45 yards and farther are outside my comfort zone. My first bow has a trophy ridge site. 3 pins and works just fine. I have often wondered about the sights that allow you to adjust the yardage for one of the pins in real time but to me there seems like there would be just too many things that could go wrong at least in my mind. Money is not an issue but no point in spending a ton of money if not needed. I think I have decided that I want to stay with fixed pins and perhaps use a 4 pin sight. 20 30 40 and 50 yards. It is all about the practice anyways no matter what you have. I have looked at all brands of sights and of course everyone has their own opinion about each one. I really like the trophy ridge brand. they seem like a good brand to me. I know you have axcel, cbe, spot hogg, etc. I am going to experiment with a heavier arrow setup with this new bow as well. So just tell me what you think about the sights and I will do more research and go from there. what about color sequence and why? what about pin dia. and why? Thanks everyone

I have the Montana black gold rush 5 pin. The top 3 pins are .19 and the bottom 2 are .10. I wish I would have went with all 1 color.

I like a 4 pin set-up with the bottom pin .10 that I use for my floater. I have been told that green and yellow are the best two colors to see in the field. I think my next sight will be Y,G,Y,G since I have a hard time seeing red.

I would go with a sight that has the same housing as the one you have and used to. Probably a 5 pin for elk and the bottom pin or two .010. I have two bows that both have Montana Black Gold sights with the same sight housing/ring. One is a 5 pin slider and the other is a custom 6 pin without the slider. ( I added a 6th pin to go out to 70) They both have the same color pattern (green, yellow, green, yellow, green) except I added a red pin for 70 on the fixed. Makes it easy to go back in forth between bows. Save a little on the sight for the back up bow. The ability to set the 3rd axis is kind of important out here where the shots can be steep.

I run a Prime Alloy and a Hoyt Hyperforce, both with same Trophy Ridge sight. YRYR 20-50 yards.

I run .10 size pins on my Spot Hogg’s. The further the distance the more of the target gets covered by the pin. A 5 pin Tommy Hogg would be a good consideration.

I use an axcel 5 pin accutouch slider.

1st off I can say it's pretty durable, punched myself in the face one day at the range, dropped my bow, and everything was still level/zeroed.

They also make a 3 pin but I was already shooting a 5 so that's what I went with. I set mine up for 20-60 yards with the 5 pins and I have two indicators so I can use either my top or bottom pin if I want to dial. This was if I want to dial let's say 35 yards, I dont have to dial my 60 pin way up.
I use only one of the accuclicks for my zero so it is always quick and easy to set the pins back to their set distances.

The OP should look at the Option 4. Three pins permanently set to what you're used to and one to dial with if you choose to.

I recently upgraded to an Option sight. It's like the best of both worlds for my needs. I love that I have 4 fixed pins, but at the same time I have a completely independent floater pin I can dial to any range I want. The multi-pin sliders are awesome, but I have seen multiple arrows launched into never never land at 3d shoots when someone forgets to reset their sight to zero after dialing for a longer shot. I can see me doing that very same thing in the heat of the moment. That is not a risk with the option sight.

I have the new MBG whitetail ascent. It’s a great site for me as I hunt whitetail all year but go west once a year. It is a lighter, more compact sight. Not super expensive and perfect for a treestand. But it is adjustable so it doubles for a western sight for me as well. Works great and rock solid.

I used the Axcel Accutouch 3 pin slider last year. Amazing sight, but the 3 pin setup cost me a bull. I'm going back to 5 pins for elk hunting.... Unless I am in New Mexico (Garmin)

My pins were setup at 20,30,40 with the idea that if the animal was under 40 I could estimate yardage, and over 40 I would have time to range and dial the bottom pin.

Got in on a bull with cows in late September, kept herding his cows away from us so we stayed hot on his trail. Worked in to 30, drew back and then got busted by his cows. I'm at full draw and the bull runs t o 60 with a small opening to shoot. he stayed there broadside for about 5 seconds. Long enough for me to have killed him with a 60 yard pin. Just didn't feel comfortable with the 40 yard pin and trying to guess the hold over. Not enough time to let down, comfirm range, dial, draw, aim, and shoot. I did the right thing in that situation I think...watched him trot off without a shot attempt.

5 pin slider, MBG or similar. Alternating G,R,G,R,G, 0.019 pins except a smaller 0.010 for the bottom pin. Get comfortable shooting longer distances before your hunt if possible.

If legal in the state you’re hunting, and money is no problem... Garmin Xero and simplify the thought process immensely.

I’ll be shooting my Garmin Xero this year. That sight changed archery for me. It’s awesome knowing your pin is exact for the distance and aiming and hitting exactly where you want to. True you can do it with a slider sight, but there’s a lot of extra thoughts and motions involved in that process. To me, this is the best hunting sight on the market.
