Bourbon

I came to this forum to learn about clothing and hunting techniques and I am being turned into a bourbon snob. It doesn't help my boss is into bourbon too.

It has been really nice on this journey that there are a few restaurants around here that are big into bourbons and have flights for tasting so I do that before I buy. One of them even has their own Eagle Rare Barrel pick.

So far my favorites are as follows:

  1. Stagg
  2. EH Taylor Small Batch
  3. Buffalo Trace
  4. Wyoming Whiskey Small Batch

On my way over to my mom's from a raffle this weekend, I saw a rare bourbon sign so I had to stop. I found Widow Jane Decadence ($150), 13 ($199) and 15 year ($299). I left with none of them. I went out to eat with Mom and saw a new liquor store across the street and stopped. They had the decadence for $99. I left with one of them.

@Reburn I'm not sure yet whether you're a good influence or not - but I just placed another couple of orders based on some of your recommendations. When it all gets here, I'll have what I think is a pretty decent start:

Bardstown Discovery Series
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof
Frey Ranch Farm Strength
John J Bowman Single Barrel
Kings County Barrel Strength
Russell's Single Barrel
Whistlepig Campstock
Whistlepig 12-yr Rye
Whistlepig 10-yr Snout to Tail Bourbon
Widow Jane Decadence
Widow Jane Lucky 13
Widow Jane The Vaults
Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit Single Barrel
Wild Turkey Rare Breed Bourbon
Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye
Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Batch Proof

I also signed up for the Found North email notifications, and ordered a sampler of the Barrell Craft stuff (Seagrass, Vantage, Batch 36).

Which disco did you get? They are different every year.

Whistlepig 10-yr Snout to Tail Bourbon - This grew on me. I didnt love it to start with as its fairly low proof and finish was thin. By the time I was to the end of my 1/2 bottle I didnt dislike it any more.

Whistlepig Campstock - I havent had this one.

Whistlepig 12-yr Rye - I like this one but I'm kinda over secondary barrel finishing so I am very selective about what I buy thats finished.

Widow Jane Decadence - I havent had this one but I'm kinda over secondary barrel finishing.

I have so many bottles I generally only buy something once unless it just knocks my socks off. Their is new bourbon coming every quarter. Dont get too wrapped up in buying 2 bottles is the only advice I can give you. Its also great if you can find a friend that will pay and spilt bottles with you. Thats how I'm able to move through so many bottles. I split them and then I also share my halfs with friends when they come over.

I’ll find out when it gets here 🤣

Not necessarily a bad thing since I’m figuring out what I like. Anything that doesn’t hit for me I’ll either give to friends or use in an Old Fashioned. So far, some of the single barrels and most of the barrel proofs I’ve had, I’ve liked.

Next step in the journey is being able to recognize what the juice is based on mashbill and where it says it was distilled.

You will find alot of MGP juice distilled in Indiana. Both aged in Indiana and aged elsewhere.
