Boots for bad ankle?

I've developed what the Dr. Calls AVN of my Talus bone from an injury I had 18 years ago. My bone is basically dying do to lack of blood. I do most of my hunting here in Idaho and get myself into some nasty places chasing Elk. Anybody have an idea on a boot that may help me carry my ass out of these holes. I've recently tried on a pair of Kenetreks and really liked them. This is a pic the brace the Dr. wants me to try.....but at $800 I thought I'd try boot first.

I see two issues: (1) Getting enough stability, and (2) getting enough stability without killing your ankle. I had an ankle reconstruction several years ago and still deal with some issues from that with boots. Specifically, I need good support.......but that support comes at a cost of comfort against the ankle bone. I've come to fore-go the stability to a point for the better comfort of a more flexible "softer" boot. I prefer the boots with a combination leather/cordura upper for these reasons. Those also breathe better than an all leather more rigid upper as well. The Crispi Idaho is a good one. I'm using the Zamberlan Dakota right now. Good luck with your search.

I have two trick ankles from old baseball injuries. Moles and outfields make for a bad mix. I've found Zamberlin's to provide the best ankle support and they save my ass probably once day from turning an ankle on a pebble. Pretty heavy boot though and your injury sounds pretty bad so I'd probably take the docs advice.

I hunted with crispI Nevadas on a mostly healed broken foot last year and lived. These are not that tall a boot though.
Boot depends on what fits best.
Listen to the doc in this. I am an old fart and assumed I knew best.
Fwiw my black Diamond trekking poles were the difference in making it back a few miles to the horses every day.

I have a bad ankle and I need support as well. LaSportiva Lohotses are rock solid for me, but they've been discontinued. I managed to find a couple pairs in stores online, but I almost had to go with plastics to keep my ankle in proper alignment. There's a couple threads around here about ankles and plastics. Maybe worth a look.

I'd go with a lighter boot and wear that brace thing. I have heavy boots and sometimes I still get that pucker moment when I step wrong.

Admittedly my ankles are much stronger since I started trail running. I've built up my strength in the joint.
