I'm needing a new boot to hunt on POW in August. The hunt will be an Alpine deer hunt. What would recommend for a boot that will be good in steep wet country with heavy packs. Hopefully extra heavy coming down. Thanks

We hunted the POW alpine for deer and bear in Sept. Other than maybe wetter at times it is much like elk hunting. Boots should be climbing appropriate with good support and moisture lined. We wore Kenetrek and Zamberlan. Worked well. Steep and rocky climbs, flat solid ridges, wet spongy forest.

I would think the boots listed above with some micro spikes or crampons or maybe pair of corked boots would be the way to go. My goat hunt last year in SE Alaska was very slippery. Too slippery.

For deer here I use Sportiva Karakorums. Not GTX, but I've had them soaked and my feet stay dry. They're lighter and cooler than my late season/goat boots and the difference is noticeable.

I think the best advice is to get your mind around the fact that you are going to have wet feet. Accept it ahead of time. Tape up with Leukotape if worried about blisters.

Nikwax and the Karakorums go together like a hand in a custom fitted lambskin glove.

I use the same boot for desert hunting and then apply the Nikwax to head up to the mountains in the snow. To me it's one of the best boots made for the money.
