Get liberal amounts of conditioner into the leather. I think I did mine twice before adding the nikwax. Make sure to get it into the threads. Mine have yet to leak and they get worn a lot, and I'm not kind to them when walking through water.

I would use whichever one the boot maker sells or recommends. Different boot makers use different compounds for laminations, sole adhesion, etc and some boot treatment products might have something in them that could have a negative reaction with the materials used. You have to buy something anyway, why not spend the $15 to buy the product the boot maker sells to protect your $400 boots? Buy the wrong product and have a problem with the sole or rand delaminating, and the boot maker will not honor the warranty.
