I enjoy reading about mountain men and frontiersmen.

Found this book a few months back - Pioneer Life; or, Thirty Years a Hunter. Being Scenes and Adventures in the Life of Philip Tome

Some very detailed descriptions about market and meat hunting for Elk out west in the late 1700s...when out west meant the middle of Pennsylvania. Not the greatest narrative but surprisingly detailed recounting of hunting dozens of elk and bear a year as well as hunting and occasionally being hunted by big cats. Some interesting encounters with Indians as well.

Not bad for $0.99 on kindle.

What else do you guys like in this genre?

Forgot to mention that this crazy knucklehead was taking bets that he could capture an elk live and he did it. Regularly.

The Master of Game by Edward of Norwich is as old school as it gets. It's the oldest English book on hunting. Steve Rinella, American Buffalo is very good. The Silence of the North by olive a. Fredrickson with Ben East is an awesome true story of a girl in the early 1900's living in the northern Canadian wilderness. It has some first hand experience on hunting and trapping at that time.

The Still Hunter, 1904. Not as much has changed about hunting as people would like to believe.

A couple I've read that I thought were good...."They Call me Hunter" about a Arizona bear and lion hunter....its good

Another[and I can't remember the title] was about a guy that killed Jaguars in Central America with those big spears. They would chase the Jag with dogs....and when the inevitable charge by the jag happened, he braced the spear and let the jag impale himself...

Try doing something like that now....and everyone from PETA to Nat Geo would be calling for your head!

Not quite as old as these but the Peter Capstick Books on Africa hunting are all good reads. Bell of Africa is also good.
