Greetings,

Western Washington hunter here. Has anyone read this book? I heard mixed review with mostly positive. What's your take?

Pretty good book from what I recall. I don't remember reading anything that resulted in an "Ah-Ha!" moment for me. I'd read it again, if I still had it. For me, it all boils down to how much effort I put in. Great book if you are just starting out, but if you've been doing it in one area, and been successful most every year for quite a few years, then it's just another book.

Boyd Iverson’s book is required reading for newer blacktail hunters in my opinion. It’s like the blacktail equivalent of Dwight Schuh’s mule deer book. Again, if you’re already having a lot of success you may not pick up much.

One exception to that is if you’re a rifle guy who primarily hunts clear cuts. Many of the biggest bucks don’t spend much time in the open after they shed velvet. Iverson’s book is a great primer for hunting in the timber, which is where I think you have the best chance at the big ones. The chapter on still hunting is great.

After Iverson’s book you should check out Scott Haugen’s if you haven’t read it. I re-read chapters from both of those almost every year.

I have always meant to read both of their books, but haven’t. If nothing else, it’s cool to hear different perspectives.

Yeah these out of print hunting books can get crazy. There's another blacktail book I was just looking at the other day by a guy named Louis Terkla. It was like $300 on Amazon. I think I paid $15 for it 3-4 years ago.

Just gotta sell your binos or something.

I have a copy of Blacktail Trophy Tactics. Got it from a thrift store for a few bucks. Don't think I'll read it again, if anyone really wants it I'll send it to you for the cost of shipping. Read a copy of Haugen's book the local library has, it's worth it to check with them.

It's a good read. Boyd really knew his stuff. He unfortunately passed away in 2015, if I recall. I worked with his brother for about 10 years.

It will have a lot of overlap, but in my experience, blacktail south of Roseburg, OR (southern Oregon/Cali) do behave differently and big bucks are more prone to be in open scrub oaks than true PNW bucks are in clear cuts (where 90% of guys try to hunt them).
