Myself and @William Hanson (live2hunt) have the opportunity to review Black Ovis's newly released Mesa 1/2 Zip Heavyweight Hoody right here on the rokslide forum.

You can check out or purchase the hoodie here.... https://www.blackovis.com/brands/blackovis/blackovis-mesa-1-2-zip-heavyweight-hoody

Black Ovis describes the hoodie as Extremely warm and designed for ultimate comfort, the Mesa Hoody is your go-to mid-to-late season layer. Whether you're pushing through cold weather hunts or layering up for extra insulation when temperatures drop, this hoody delivers versatile performance. Ideal for long, cold mornings on the mountain, tree stand, duck blind, or other frigid activities the Mesa Hoody adapts to keep you warm and comfortable in any scenario.

The hoodie itself is made of 100% Merino Wool, 400gsm, Brushed backside according to the website and has the YKK zippers that we all prefer and look for. It's half zip and has a kangaroo pocket with zippered closure and chest pocket as well.

I just received mine and the hoodie itself looks really great, and feels very comfortable. Stay tuned to this thread for further and deeper information!

Following. How is the fit? Compared to kuiu or sitka? Might have to get one and compare directly to Sitka core 330 Merino

I plan to do some initial unboxing and fit test this evening! thanks! I love my kryptek chronos hoodie, so much I bought an extra one for when my favorite one wears out, so this hoodie will be up against some stiff competition to impress me etc. I will say this hoodie is thicker and seems like it will be warmer than the chronos hoodie if that helps any at this time,

Maybe it's just me @blackovis but I don't need a chest pocket (or arm pocket) on tops. I can see the kangaroo pockets on this one for stands but I've yet to use a chest pocket on any layer. If I do - then every time I add/takeoff a layer I've got to take it out and put it in the next. If I have something like that I put it in my bino harness or my pant pockets then I don't have to do any of that.

I'd think this would cut a little more cost out and keep things even more competitive.

Love your stuff though!

In 1985, the Chicago Bears selected William Perry in the first round of the NFL Draft, he was known as the "Refrigerator". In 2024 I was given the opportunity to review the Black Ovis Mesa Hoodie, it shall be known as "The Heater"!

Seriously guys this thing is WARM, I recently tried it out on a eastern Montana Mule Deer trip, temperatures averaged from low 20's in the mornings to 50's throughout the day, and of course it's the eastern plains/hills of Montana so there was 10-15 mph winds everyday as well.

I will start of with size and fit: I found the hoodie to be pretty much spot on as far as size and fit, I wear 2XL and I got the 2XL hoodie and it fits fine. I wore a t shirt under the hoodie each day. If you plan on layering with a thin merino wool or something underneath, then you might go a size up, however I don't see why anyone would need much more than a t shirt or thin athletic shirt under this hoodie, it's that warm, seriously.

Comfort level on a scale of 1-10 I would give it a 9.5 the brushed backside is soft and comfy, the thick merino wool just makes for an overall nice, soft feeling hoodie to wear. The only thing I wish it done better is cover more of your face with the hood when it's completely zipped.

The zippers are sturdy as well all expect with the YKK zippers, the Kangaroo pocket is nice to put your hands in etc. if you need to warm them up as well. I think I put my phone in the chest pocket some, it's large enough to store something like that, I am sure some people would find it useful, and some not. I also enjoy the thumb holes in the end of the sleeves, a lot of times I could go gloveless with just my thumbs in these holes and the sleeve covering most of my hands and was comfy.

As far as wearing it, and usability, did I mention this thing is super warm?? lol. I mostly wore it in the mornings and evenings, and when we were stationary glassing. I will say there were times during our hunt I had to take it off and store it in my pack, because it made me to hot while walking in it. Granted I am well insulated, also. I tend to get hot easily, maybe you guys that stay cold would not have to shed the hoodie as much as I did.

I am looking forward to wearing this hoodie here in the east while whitetail hunting, my usual layering system consists of a t shirt, thin merino wool shirt or thinner hoodie, and a kuiu kenai jacket as extra insulating layer when needed, then a softshell to break the wind. I think i can get away with just wearing a t-shirt, this mesa hoodie, and a soft shell to break the wind in temps down to the zero's. (I will report back on this when I do it)

Speaking of wind, I will say this hoodie doesn't buck the wind, even as thick and warm as it is, I still kept a soft shell coat in my pack, and put it on when glassing once the wind started coming through the hoodie on me.

Overall i think this hoodie could possibly find it's way into the ultimate cold weather layering system, I am not sure how much early bowhunters could utilize it, unless it is just your main layer over a t shirt or something similar. But it definitely has it's place for sure. If you are the type of person bothered by cold, it's definitely for you as well, somewhere in your layering system.

As a bonus, this hoodie looks good enough to wear out and about when not hunting as well, most people wouldn't even recognize it as hunting gear. You could strike a pose at your local watering hole (such as in the picture below, and trust me all the ladies will come running)
