Camofire has some of the blackovis Merino Layers on sale today! Pretty good savings if you were a little cold this hunting season.

I’ve never used it, but heard that it was rougher than other brand wool pieces. Can you confirm this?

Idk if its rougher. But the tops all run a size small and its not near as durable as firstlite.
Its a good entry-level and I like the light weight hoodie has a zipper. But if you want something that will last look elsewhere.
It is good starter kit though.

I have one of the black ovis and 2 from Kuiu. The black ovis is a bit rougher out of the packaging but it was still very comfortable to wear. If it holds up well I'll buy more. I'm going to give it a few hunts and see how it does. If it holds up well I'll buy more but otherwise I'll spend the extra $ on the other brands.

It seems to hold up ok. I have had stitching come up on two pieces. It is a little rougher. It seems to loose its shape a bit more also after a day or two. For the price it is hard to beat though when on sale. My brother has my old pieces and thrashes them. They held up to long term abuse.

I would say the gloves though, the stitch line runs on the base of your thumb on the palm and it drives me nuts. Wont wear those at all.

BlackOvis merino is definitely rougher & more itchy. I grabbed a bunch at the beginning of the season. Now wish I would have gone with First Lite. I may sell all my Black Ovis stuff.

I grabbed some FirstLite aerowool. It's WAY better and softer than BlackOvis' merino. CamoFire has a good price on BlackOvis merino but I'd still pay for First Lite.

Just think about it, part of hunting is sitting still and being comfortable is paramount. You don't want to be itching yourself sitting in the stand or glassing game, or fidgeting with scratching your neck or arms cuz the Merino itches....Nah, gimme my FL aerowool.

Yeah, FL is double the price, but well worth it.

I won't wear any other base layers.

FLs gear overall is fantastic. Little pricey, but I've bought several systems from them the past few months. I like it 10x better than my Sitka, it fits way better. I find their website & product descriptions better & their videos at the bottom are super helpful.

Sitka gear is confusing and almost everything on their website appears to be all the same. They appear to have like 3-4 pieces of gear for every situation that does the same thing. Their website descriptions aren't very helpful and their sizing is difficult.

My experience with Black Ovis merino has been positive. I have only purchased and worn the bottoms, so I cannot comment on the tops being itchy or smaller in size. I've had great luck with the bottoms though and will continue to use them. I cannot tell a difference in roughness / itchy-ness, btw brands. I have Justin Charles, Kuiu, First lite, and Duckworth to compare too. My Justin Charles, First lite and Kuiu are all blown out in the crotch. This is after 4-5 seasons of use though. In fairness, the Duckworth and Black Ovis are the newest of the bunch, and I have a season under each now.

No opinions Black Ovis merino tops as I've had great luck with First Lite and Duckworth. I've had my First lite merino the first year they started offering it, and the tops have absolutely held up wonderfully.

Well when I saw it on sale, I jumped quick and then decided to let you guys know. If it isn't top shelf, at least it was cheap and at the end of the day, its still wool.
