I was looking around for non hunting brand clothing and ran across black diamond.. Specifically the dawn patrol line. They make it in good earth tone colors.. Schoeller fabric which I hear is supposed to be the best fabric made.. And right now its on sale 20-40% off.. Anybody have any history or thoughts on this?? Im probably going to be using it for backpack archery elk and a mountain goat hunt in b.c. next year..Thanks in advance..

I have a few pieces. It is good stuff, as well made as anything out there, and good fabrics. The Coefficient vest 2nds are a steal.

I also have the Dawn Patrol Touring pant. Great for BC skiing, but would be too warm for me in weather much above 40F. If you have thunder thighs these pants will not fit.

Thanks for replying Dave.. Do u think the dawn patrol would be the best for temps 30-60? And the 2nds? I'm not sure I follow ya? CN you elaborate on that a little.. Thanks

2nds are typically items with cosmetic flaws which do not impede function, but can't be sold for full retail. BD has a few of the insulation pieces for sale as 2nds, and they're a good deal given the quality of materials and construction. I've been impressed with the aforementioned vest; it has a great fit and the material is just the right level of warmth.

Most of the Dawn Patrol line is built from 260 grams per square meter weight fabric. That's almost 8 ounces a yard, which is pretty darn thick. It's great for skiing because it is very tough, and blocks a lot of wind while still being breathable. Like I said, I would find the DP Touring pant very sweaty in temps above 40F. You might have different preferences. I find substantially lighter pants, which can be layered over long underwear when necessary, a more versatile setup for hunting.

Dave, thanks for the info.. Would you have any suggestions? I like the schoeller idea because it is so versatile(thats what I hear).. Does anybody make something you may suggest? Thanks alot

clothing systems

A broad question which really amounts to a full clothing explication. These questions are almost impossible to answer, as too much depends on individual preferences, differences in physiology and style, and location/season.

Out of the BD line I really like the Alpine Start hoody. The fabric in fantastic, and it balances weight and durability, breathability and weatherproofing, and features very well. Unless its fully raining its the kind of piece I wear all fall and winter, just varying the amount of insulation underneath, and throwing a big coat over for cold glassing sessions/breaks/camp/etc. Good as it is, I would personally hesitate if I had to pay full retail, though comparable and less well executed pieces from hunting companies cost even more (e.g. Sitka Ascent jacket). Note that people who put out less heat than I do, and/or move slowly, will complain about the lack of windproofing in these light windshells. Hence the popularity of laminate non-waterproof soft shells (e.g. Gore Windstopper) for hunting use, even though they have poor breathability and a bad function/weight ratio.

If I had to pick hunting pants out of the BD line, I'd get the BDVs, though they're a bit on the heavy side for my preferences. Together with long johns suited to the conditions and rain pants they'd cover 70-0F with ease.

Alright.. Good info Dave.. Thanks.. I would be open to other ideas as we'll f anybody wants to give advice.. Mammut maybe west comb rei or anything else.. Thanks to everybody in advance..

kipper & Dave, can you provide a link to where you're finding the vest for 20-40% off or find the 2nds for sale? Feel free to send me a PM if you'd like. Thanks

The jasper color is a nice vaguely brown green, and the mineral is more brown in person that it looks on a screen. I really like the Coefficient fabric. It's a heavier version of the most recent Capilene 4, and is a fantastic, quick drying midlayer which is very warm for the weight. Everything except the big insulated jackets is quite athletic in cut, weight-lifter types will probably want to size up.
