Black bears on black bear carcass

Trying to limit my number of dumb posts per week so here goes this weeks! Lol but seriously idk anything about bears that hasn’t mostly came from the discovery channel or animal planet.

Will black bears get on a black bear carcass like they would a prey animal like a deer? I think I’ve heard of males killing cubs but I thought that was more of a territorial dominance thing.

I used to hunt know an old outfitter that is long gone now that would first use a horse then just pile up bear carcasses
Said they shot something like 20 or more in one spot one year
This was in the wind river range out of Dubois WY back in the 80's

i believe they do this so the sow goes into heat again. but maybe thats just brown/grizzly bears

I’ve read the same. Same with lions also. Kill the cubs so they can get laid.

Yes. All bears do this, just like ground squirrels.

Definitely. I was with my buddy when he got a bear. I had a trail cam with me so I put it on the carcass. First bear showed up to it three days later which is the one below. Two other bears showed up in the next 5 days until one dragged it off.

One time I had a bear poke his head in at me at about 5 yards as I was butchering a bear I'd killed about an hour earlier. Guessing he would have been happy to chow down if I hadn't been there. Thankfully he ran off as soon as he saw me. Kind of weird in a way - because I presume if he could smell the carcass, he could also smell me. Perhaps he followed the scent of the blood trail in?
