Black bear outfitter to take my son on a hunt??

Looking to take my teen son on a spring black bear hunt. Don’t want to spend Alaska money but doesn’t necessarily have to be super cheap either. Decent camp, safe stands, and seeing lots of bears is the priority. I hear lots of good things about Canada. I have heard great things about Byron Wolf with Wolf hunting adventures but his new camp there isn’t any fishing….my understanding is you typically only hunt the evening…..so thinking being able to fish in the morning would keep the boy entertained??? What does a typical bear hunting day look like? What do you do all morning if you don’t hunt till the late afternoon?

Any outfitters you recommend that works well with kids (teen), or just good outfitters in general?

Don't know about being able to fish but Misty River in Alberta offer a good remote hunting experience.

You mention stands, are you only wanting to hunt over bait? British Columbia has tons of black bears and good outfitters, but no baiting. Mainly because it’s not needed there.

I had the best trip of my life with the McCarthys at North Mountain Adventures in Manitoba. They have a teenage son who is one cool kid. He runs his own trap line and is a hunting fool. I bet your boy would get along with him extremely well.

They are wonderful folks, the camp is outstanding and the bears and hunting are incredible. Two over 430lb and 4 over 318lb in one week of hunting. They have awesome setups with double ladders. Cost for my week was $3,500.

You’re welcome to run into town, go fish on a nearby river or lake or anything else you would like to do in the mornings. We shot, hung out and played music and just had a good old time.

I couldn’t recommend them enough. Truly the best hunting week of my life. An outfitter can make or break a hunt and they made it for me.

I can recommend Dogskin Lake Lodge in northern Manitoba. They are a fly-in lodge that is mainly a fishing lodge, but they do spring bears and fall moose. I moose hunted with them.

They have great stands for bears and the fishing is world-class for pike and walleye. The typical day is to get up, go somewhere on the lake where they have a bear stand and do a morning hunt. Come back to the lodge mid-morning, go out and fish for a while (if you want to), eat a fresh walleye lunch, and then head back out in the afternoon for the evening sit.

Last year they went 7 for 8 on bears and the guy that didn't shoot had multiple opportunities but was holding out for a color-phase or a giant. This past spring they went 8 for 8.

It is a bit more expensive than some of the other lodges in middle Canada, but that is because it includes the flight from the float plane base to the lodge.

My son (14), dad, brother and I went to Idaho this past Spring and hunted with York outfitters. It was an absolute awesome trip. Fits all the criteria you mentioned. He has a beautiful trout stream running through camp to fish. He has stands with sites well maintained and monitored for activity and you have plenty of room to spot and stalk if you chose. It is very remote and you need to plan for a day to get to camp and day to get out of camp, but it was a great experience.

Into the Wilds in Saskatchewan. Sheldon runs a great camp. Food and accommodations are top notch. Big bears, color phase bears and lots of them. Please don’t shoot the first one you see!

On the spring black bear hunt I did in northern Idaho we tended to sleep part of the morning when usually we would have been up and about. That's because we would leave camp early to mid afternoon and not get back until 10:00 or later. Supper tended to be close to midnight. We would be on the stand until almost dark, and that happens pretty late that time of year, followed by an hour or more on horseback to get back to camp.
