Only black bear I have ever shot. This was my son's high school graduation trip in September '24 is NW Maine. Unfortunately he never saw a bear. I shot this bear after only sitting in a ground blind for 2 hours on the first afternoon's hunt. Extracted tooth put the bear at 8-9 years old.. I am 6' 5" and weigh 215lbs. Bear was not weighed, but by comparison to me you can see it was a good sized animal.
Me and him have a hunt scheduled in N Idaho this Spring and I have asked the outfitter to put him on the best stand possible as a redemption on him not getting one in '24.
Bear was shot at ~40 yards behind the shoulder for a double pass through with my H&R .45/70 Buffalo Classic with a 300 grain Winchester JHP bullet.
My son did shoot a 8pt down here in Louisiana early January '25 with the same rifle and bullet and blew the heart clean out.
Doe I shot down here in Louisiana in December '25 with same rifle and bullet. Dropped her in her tracks.
I bought the rifle prior to the Louisiana 2012 Primitive arms season when I learned single shot, breech-loading rifles with an exposed hammer would be legal.
I often use this rifle during regular season because it is awesome. Have harvested many other deer with it in the past...
