Honestly id like to spend about $200, but im not sure that will get me anything decent. No more then $500 I guess. Most of my glassing will be done sitting down. although having the option to stand up would be nice but not necessary

Brock did a review on a great tripod that he and Littlebuf use. I'm not sure what the name is though.

I use a Slik but I can't remember which one.

I'll echo Aron on this. I've been using a Slik 624 with a Swaro ATS80. Great tripod for the price and very stable for it's weight.

I'm really liking my Sirui T-025X. I picked mine up for $220 and will likely sell the head that came on it for $40 to 50. It works fine with their ball head, but I added the Outdoorsman Panhead and the thing is superb now. It weighs a little more with the OD head (2.19 lbs), but the ability to pan and tilt with one hand and leave the ATM 80 in place after finding a spot is much better than having to tighten down the other ball head type mechanism.

What is the best head to use with the Slik 624?

I'm using the Outdoorsman pan head with my 624. So far, it seems like a good compromise of lightweight and stability. Having said that, I only have about 5 hrs using this combo with my zeiss 85.

wow that things is expensive AitchAr. Can't find the weight on it. Do you know?

12 oz. worth it though... thing is absolutely bulletproof and simple. No gadgets to break, no plastic.
I have one on my slik sprint mini... but will be getting a 624 soon.

If you get the slik with the outdoorsman head, make sure you get the reducer for the threads. 3/8 to 1/4, 20. I think the Outdoorsman pan head is backordered for a couple months, but you can find them used on here or elsewhere for a good discount.

I was ok with a cheap tripod setup with a ball head... until I got my big zeiss, too heavy and too high mag to put up with the wiggle.

On my scale it weighs 11oz. Like squeekieslayer said, it's simple and as tough as can be. The tension adjusters for up/down and left/right work great.

ETA: take a look at the Vanguard ph-111v. Supposed to be a good pan head for the money.
