I have never looked through a pair of 8x30s but I can't help but think they would be ideal for picking your way through timber and brush with a bow in one hand. Would a pair of range finding compact optics would be ideal for still hunting?....is this even an option?

I'd love to hear what you guys use for timber/still hunting.

I have never seen a RF Bino that is anywhere close to being compact. I could be wrong though.

If I had my dithers, I would be packing a pair of Swarovski 8X30 CL's for timber and bowhunting.

That's the exact bino I had in mind. I'll likely trade or sell my 10x42 Conquest for them....the 17 ounces of the CL sure is appealing. I was afraid I'd hear that about the RF too.

Anyone know how the quality stacks up between the Conquest and CL lines? I believe they offer a Conquest in the 8x32 package.

I use my Leica Ultravid 8x32 for "chasing elk" and tree standing in thicker stuff. They are ideal for use where most glassing is under 200 yards and weigh about 19 ounces if I remember correctly. For longer range use I do prefer my Swaro 10x42s. I like having a choice of binoculars for what/where you are hunting. Just like coats or boots, but unfortunately expensive.

I have a pair of 10x42 ELs and a pair of 8x30 CLs. I bought the CLs for the exact purpose you mentioned, namely bowhunting through areas that don't lend themselves to longrange glassing. You don't lose much in the optical department and the weight and size make them just about perfect for that application.

I have a pair of 6x32 Vortex Vipers that work really well. I use them out to 300yd without issue. Clear glasses negates the need for higher power. I had 8x32 Burris signature compacts prior to these Vortex, only 14-16oz. work great in timber. I normally don't use over 8x. Those Swaro's should work nice.
