Anyone have any suggestions for the best ride on Lawn Mower for 3-5 acres?

Electric? Gas? Brand?

Would love to hear actual experience on equipment you own.

Thanks

I picked up a Toro zero turn a few years ago and have been very happy with it. The built in seat suspension is awesome when mowing large tracks of bumpy ground. For that large of an area don't get anything less than a 60".

I have an acre and a half and just bought a used 46" Huskvaurna. I just used it for the 1st time last Saturday and got about 10% of the yard cut, before I hit a stump and broke the deck and 1 of the blades. replacement parts are supposed to arrive tomorrow. It was definitely opperator error, so I can't fault the machine.

For electric, the run times vary quite a bit and I think you're on the large side to get it all done in 1 charge. I wonder how they determine the acreage per charge too, like if it was long, or relitively short?.....mine will be very long by the time I get it cut. Hopefully I don't have another "false start".

Look for a zeroturn for that acreage. I run Ferris for my business. What's your price range like?

I would check around your area for the zero turn dealer with the best service reputation and buy from them.

Type of lawn matters as well, I have a pretty steep hill that is super bumpy and havent founds a way to deal with it yet...

Do you have many obstacles? Trees, edging, posts...
Do you want it do anything other than cut grass?
Do you have any hills or ditches?
How much time do you want to spend on each cutting?
How much space do you have for storage?
Are you going to work on it or have someone else do it?

I have a Scag Turf Tiger. 61" cut, water cooled Kawasaki that I bought new in 1999.
Still running like a top.
Clean with air compressor after every use especially the air filter.
New blades every year. I have lots of sticks and small limbs that get mowed.
I don't know about Ferris but there are times I wish I had their front suspension.

If you don't maintain 5 acres as LAWN I would consider just having it mowed once a month saving space in your garage, fuel costs and the maintenance of a big zero turn.

Or bushhog it a couple times a year.

Some good info in this thread:

I’d find a zero turn with a serviceable hydraulic system. Most box store (lowes/home depot) mowers are not serviceable, meaning they are disposable. I’d also find one with a commercial engine, honda or kawasaki commercial seemed to have the best reviews a few years ago when I bought mine. Suspension is also a very nice feature to have.
