I've never done any elk hunting (or any Western hunting for that matter), but I'm interested in giving it a try in the coming years. Curious what states have the best options for public hunting ground? I'm open to spending a few years building preference points if it will get me into quality hunting ground.

The point game is a black hole that will lead you to sitting seasons out on the couch. I would get GOHUNT or something similar to find a place to hunt next year and give it a go.

If you’ve never gone, go. There’s lots of options to get any bull, cow, and spike tags out there. The learning curve is crazy on elk. They are tough to hunt but with a bow is even more so.

Pick a state that’s most convenient to spend time in. Learn that unit well. Spend time scouting and Start putting in on thwir draw system and then get any available tag and get in and get those reps.

I hunt one of the top units in Utah every year though it will be a while before I get the bull tag. I get a spike tags which is good for a cow or spike. Have yet to get it done with my bow but I’m in there figuring them out and dream about that place all year long. It has amazing elk and I see them every year. But it is a rough unit with mostly dark timber.

I can’t wait to get back there.
