Best "old" 4x4 truck for hunting? $5k range.

I haven’t seen one mention for an older Jeep Cherokee XJ, specifically with the unbreakable 4.0L straight 6. I bought mine for $2K 4.5 years ago. Today, the heater core is non-functional, the frame is not worth fixing, and the right leaf spring has a broken leaf, but it’s still my daily driver.

OK Paul Harvey, tell us why so cheap

single cab 5.4 isnt exactly what most folks are lookin for these days. I'd figure on needing to toss a few bucks into the thing to get it mostly a solid truck. Bet you'd come in around $4k by the time you were done

Hell if it was local, I'd probly add the thing to my fleet of shitboxes :ROFLMAO: Plenty of deals out there, helps to have cash ready to go, and not be in a hurry..

Lots of great buys out there, the hope for this post is to say why you recommend a truck. Have you had one? do you trust the brand? Thanks all for the great input!

I've hunted with several trucks, two Fords, a Chevy, and two straight axle Toyotas. Trucks are fine if you're going to haul campers, trailers, boats and such. But if it's more of a hunting, offroading scouting vehicle I'd rather have a SUV. I've had a Nissan Pathfinder, Bronco II which have gotten crazy expensive, and a couple of XJ Cherokees. I prefer the XJ Cherokee. Burns less gas unless you do a lift and large tires, easy to work on and parts aren't too bad. The wheel very well and I've slept in the back of one when I was younger.
Edit: If anyone is looking for an engine rebuild kit for a 1979-1984 Toyota let me know. I have a complete kit with all the gaskets, pistons and even a rv cam.

I haven't bought a Ford since a new 150 in 1990. Buddies have some 7.3s. Didn't realize late 90s gassers were give aways. Hell I'd buy it to keep my son outta my gmcs if it was road worthy, and not 2850 miles away. My crippled up ass usually leaves trailers hooked to 3 out of 4 during planting and hunting months. I ain't dragging or toting.

If one wasnt in a hurry, I'd sit tight and wait for a manual trans rig to pop up. It'll be a few bucks more, but worth it IMO
