That, Journal of a Trapper, the book about Jedidiah Smith and the one about Jo Meek, Death Valley in '49..... They were all more tough than I'll ever understand

My bank account will be drained after this post. I have many of them. Not mountain man related but a very interesting read is My Life on the Plains By George Armstrong Custer. The wildness and the everyday dealings of life in that transition time period is amazing.
