I am looking for a cheap 60 or 80mm spotter for a elk hunt my son drew. I had a spotter but sold it because my styleof of elk hunting doesn't call for one. I am looking at Alpen but wondering if they are a complete waste of money. Is there any better cheap spotters out there?

If you are interested I have a red field rampage 20-60x60 straight spotting scope kit. Comes with case, view through case and tripod. In great shape. Send a pm if you want more info or pics. Michael

Celestron M2 Regal 65 here
I got it on sale for around $300 and I really like it.
I mainly use it at the range and watching deer and other critters locally. I don't use a spotter where I elk hunt, just binos.

I bought a cheapo, and turned around and sold it. Not worth spending the money on imho. Now I'm looking at spending $$$ on a Swaro.

I'd rather have a good pair of binos and a tripod, than a cheap spotting scope. Ymmv.

I've had both the 60 and 80 mil Vortex Diamondback Spotters. They've worked great for me. Plus the warranty is really awesome. I've had three products that I've had to send back to Vortex for repairs due to me dropping them. Each time, I've had a brand new product in the mail within a week. Just had to pay for the shipping to get it to them.

Looking at picking up a vanguard endeavor. What tripod/head works with it? Is it a "normal" mount?

Yes. I have a Vanguard Endeavor HD 65s. Standard tripod mounts.

Any standard quick release plate will attach to the vanguard, it has the 1/4-20 threads on the foot.

For budget I look at slilk 340/330 ez. Very solid tripod and the 707e is a decent head
