Hey guys, I'm finally getting rid of my trusty old flip phone and investing in a smartphone. Any recommendations for the best digiscoping phone? I'll be ordering a phone scope shortly after ordering my phone.
I have had the best pictures I've ever had out of a phone (and I've tried quite a few) with my Sony phones. Depending on who you have for service there will be a few options, but none are available through the provider directly. If you have a GSM provider (anyone but Sprint or Verizon) you can get any of them, but the most current are the Z5 and Z5 Compact. If on Verizon you're stuck with the older Z3V, which is what I own. The reason I prefer the Sony phones is that they are 100% waterproof (to 9ft for 30 min), have a very good camera and descent software. Samsung has terrible software, so if I go back to Samsung I will replace the software on day 1.
I have only digiscoped with it once and it was by holding it by hand up to my spotting scope, so it could've been much better but the results were okay. Keep in mind, this is also with a pretty cheap spotting scope (80mm Celesteron). https://goo.gl/photos/c9ChVxhB84irwH5T6
For good deals on these phones and others in different used conditions check out swappa.com. It is a site dedicated to used phones and is much safer than ebay because they verify that the phone hasn't been stolen or anything.
I use Apple phones for the UI, but it just so happens the cameras are pretty decent too. While I have a iPhone 6 plus, the newest 6s and 6s Plus have outstanding image quality and the 4K video is exceptional for a phone.
I've been very happy with my iPhones but I don't have any experience with any of the other phones so nothing to compare them to. Here are a couple pictures from my old 5S using a Swaro 80mm HD spotter. I believe these were taken from about 500 yards away, give or take.
