I’ve been backpacking and pack hunting for about 25 years now. I’ve tried everything from huge tents, ultralight tents, tipis, tarps, bicycles bags, and hammocks. It’s personal but here’s what I’ve found:
For a pack in and camp setup with a group a big tipi is the best. Lots of room for gear, making dinner, staying out of storms, etc.
For 2 people a free-standing tent is always preferable to a tarp or ultralight tent. The extra pound is worth it’s weight, 100% big and rain protection, no need for separate ground cover, etc. My go to for this has been a Marmot Crane Creek 3P. It’s 2 pounds per person, roomy, with a vestibule and cheap enough to not worry about it.
Anytime it’s not below 20 degrees and if it’s in a forest, I’m in a hammock! Best sleep I’ve ever had.
Some people love tarps and single layer hiking pole tents but I tried for years to make them work and the loss of sleep in bugs/bad weather was never worth it.
