Tossing around the idea of a new rifle in 308…
-Bergara b14 SP (top pick at the moment)
-Tikkas
-Winchester XPR
-CVA
-HOWA
-I have no issue about used guns either

I like light guns. Currently shooting a (Ruger American Predator) I hunt rain, snow, lay my rifles on the ground etc. I’ll likely have a 1-4 or 1-6 on the gun when it’s setup… i don’t baby my guns, so I draw the line at $750 for hunting

Let me know your experiences with these or whatever else you carry in that budget

Im a big fan of the bergara B14 as well as the tikka t3x.

my .02
Tikka lighter & slightly better factory trigger

Bergara better stock & threaded barrel

My experience is both have excellent actions, barrels and great accuracy.

This guys got a few really good videos on rifle comparisons.

That said Ive used bergara and tikka from your list. Its a toss up either way each have their pros and cons. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another.

The tikka has the smoothest action but the biggest downfall is the plastic stocks. Still wouldn't be horrible for what you are looking for. The Bergara would be my second choice (barely). The TC Venture with weathershield is surprisingly a very accurate rifle for under $600 also. Its a great value rifle.

You may want to add Sako fin light to your list. It’s a little more $ but boy is it worth it. You want to talk about quality at an affordable price! Fairly light for mtn hunting. I bought mine in 300 wsm and use it for elk moose deer antelope sheep mtn goat and bear. I only put 1 shell in the chamber because I know when I shoot the animal is dead!

They'll all do the job. The Tikka does it for me without the need for upgrading the trigger. I've grown fond of the stock with replaceable grip as well. Add a set of sportsmatch TO48c rings directly to the factory rail w/scope and you're set. I tend to add a cheek pad w/pocket but it's not necessary.

jimss, definitely only put one shell in your shotgun chamber at a time. It's a good rule of thumb to only have one cartridge in your rifle chamber too. Personally I like to have at least a couple in the magazine after that.

Bergara or CVA Cascade. I have two Cascades and a Bergara Stalker. The Stalker is the Premier line but I have no doubt the B14 is quality. Don’t sleep on the Cascade though for your price range. You probably know, but CVA is tied in with Bergara. All the Bergara products I have shoot lights out. The stocks and triggers feel great. I had two Tikkas and was shocked at how little I liked them. Didn’t shoot any better, marginally worse, than my other guns (including TC Ventures I had) and the stock is inferior to other guns. I’d go with a TC Venture before Tikka. Just my opinion. Other people love them.

Shoulder as many as you can and whittle the list down from there.

T3X Lite or SuperLite (stainless) is a viable option. Another option is the Savage Storm Lightweight.

Both are great values for the money, usually shoot exceptionally well, and are a pleasure to carry.

Picked up a Savage Axis II (stainless) in 6.5 CM to use specifically as a beater. That is a rifle that folks on Rokslide will slam 24/7 as it’s shortcomings go on for pages. But that “SOB” would consistently shoot 3-shot groups of commercial ELD-X between .5-.6 MOA. Sold it to a friend and this “POS” rifle is still killing stuff.

I personally love it when “crappy and poorly built” rifles outshoot the “better in all regards” rifles. But I’m not nearly as enlightened as others.

Many sub 1K rifles have molded stocks because they are cheaper and easier to produce. Most have plastic trigger guards, IE bottom metal. I look at what is on the gun racks and I always go back to Tikka. The value and quality are there. The stainless barrel is probably the best or at least in the top tier of any production rifles. The veil or rough tech, D18 all seem to be a good value for folks that want a fluted, threaded barrel and a pic rail. Plenty of tikka assecories out there if you decide to change something.

Do want to clarify a point.

Nothing wrong with nice and/or pricey rifles. But if a rifle is going to be used, and potentially abused, there's not necessarily a great reason to spend any more money than necessary.

Tikka T3x.

I was a classic rifle man for years -- Winchester 94, Marlin 336, Winchester Model 70...

Then, I sold all my rifles and committed to shooting left-handed guns.

The Tikka was easy to find in lefty and priced right so I gave it a try this year.

Love it because:
  • Fantastic accuracy
  • Upgraded trigger spring with Lumley arms kit and have a beautiful 2# trigger pull
  • The stock fit me best and is superior to cheaper synthetics you see with Savage
  • Added the "vertical grip" for $20 and it basically mimics a Manners or McMillan stock grip
  • Tons of upgrades, including bottom metals and high end shouldered pre-fit barrels if you want to change later
  • 7.5# scoped with Sportsmatch rings and old Leupold VX II 3-9x33 Ultralight scope

Can be had a lot cheaper if you have a 10% off code, use raise gift card, and active junky. Just picked one up and my total cost with tax is ~$560
Same question as @scottprice ... how does one come across a 10% off code?...and all that other stuff?

Are the gift cards a hassle? I am familiar with Rakuten but not Active Junkie.
