Bergara? Tikka? Other? (Sub $750)

You may want to add Sako fin light to your list. It’s a little more $ but boy is it worth it. You want to talk about quality at an affordable price! Fairly light for mtn hunting. I bought mine in 300 wsm and use it for elk moose deer antelope sheep mtn goat and bear. I only put 1 shell in the chamber because I know when I shoot the animal is dead!

glad to hear it...I'd hate to see what happens when you put 2 rounds in the chamber at once.

Picked up my first Tikka rifle in stainless .300WM. Put a leupold 4.5-14 on it with matching rings. It is lightweight and accurate. I've got a safe full of mid to high end browning, weatherby and mauser rifles. The tikka is on that same quality level, but at a much more competitive price point.

A couple of years ago I was pretty set on getting a Tikka based on the tremendous volume of positive reviews/recommendations here on Rokslide. I went to my local gun shop and picked one up and really didn't like how it felt and shouldered. It was mostly the cheap feel of the stock, which can be upgraded, but I didn't want to get into that. I'm not knocking the Tikka as I've honestly never shot one, I just didn't personally like how they shouldered so I went a different route.

I picked up a Bergara at the same shop and it was night and day difference for me. I now own 2 Bergaras. I'm sure the Tikkas shoot just as well but I couldn't get myself to buy one. I'd recommend you handle each in person before making a decision as everyone has different preferences.

That said, if you really like "light rifles", Bergaras will likely be a disappointment in that regard. I do think they are a great value and I'm personally ok with the extra weight but if it's a big concern for you I'd definitely handle one before buying to make sure it weighs and balances how you want.

I'm a big fan of Tikka rifles. I have 4 of them currently. I'm in the same boat as you, I HUNT with mine in western WA, Idaho, Oregon. My rifles don't get babied. Tikkas flat out shoot! The "cheap" stocks haven't bothered me a bit.

I have a tikka veil in 308 and Bergara Ridge Sp in 308. I shoot both guns suppressed 100% of the time. The Bergara feels great and is “handy” with the shorter barrel. I feel like both guns have slick actions and great factory triggers. (I put an Mcarbo spring in my tikka and it’s even better now)

I spent a ton of money and time trying to find a load to consistently shoot sub MOA in the Bergara. The only factory load that would get close was 175 gr federal terminal ascents.
My tikka shoots EVERYTHING from 150-180gr in tiny little groups.

I’m buying tikkas from here on

Fwiw, Tikka makes compact rifles with shorter length of pull and shorter barrels. I like the lop on the regular t3x but shorten the barrels.

When I came up with that handle, I WAS new to Savage. Not so much anymore.

I would have liked my Tikkas more if I had just lopped them all off to 20" barrels. But then the action is still long too. I like my short action Savages with the accutriggers and 20" barrels and 10 min. barrel swaps. They suit me.

For what it’s worth, I’ve read countless hundreds of posts on Rokslide’s rifle forums and the Tikka T3x is mentioned more than any other gun, by a huge margin. Goes without saying that there’s a reason for that.

Group think? Echo chamber? Herd mentality? Please know, I’m joking with you. . They have a huge following here and I tried a couple Tikkas myself because of so many positive reviews. They are the kings of Rokslide Firearms forum. This forum is great for leading people through all the options out there until they find the best fit for themselves. It’s great to have this awesome place to learn and consider options/opportunities.

I have first hand experience with both the Bergara and Tikka. They both are great. The Bergara was a 308 and the tikka a 300 wm. You really cant go wrong with either.

I liked the Bergara factory trigger and the fact that they take rem 700 footprint aftermarket stuff. You can really grow with that rifle and make it exactly what you want. Mine shot sub and is the rifle I did my 600 yd certification for my gun club with. Bergara is gaining in popularity, they just haven't been around as long as some others. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

The tikka also has a good factory trigger. Im not nuts about the stock (T3X) but that can easily be changed. The tikka gets alot of praise on this forum and for good reason. It has earned a reputation for being consistently accurate over the years.
