Benelli SBE issue

Does anyone know a gunsmith in the general vicinity of the northern Colorado Front Range that could diagnose and fix a shell feeding issue?

I have an original SBE that has been having trouble feeding from the magazine. This past winter, I had it with a guy in town who took months to replace a bolt cam but it still won't feed from the magazine.

The gentleman who had it said I could bring it back under warranty, but I would rather just get it fixed.

At this time, the the bolt lockup is good and chambered rounds fire reliably. The problem is with the feed ramp. Shells eject from the magazine but do not get picked up from the bolt off of the carrier.

I'm not sure exactly what the problem is here. There are marks on the rear of the carrier ramp that make me wonder if the shells are getting too far back. The other hypothesis I have is that some sort of spring is worn out and the lift is too slow for the speed of the bolt closure.

This gun was completely reliable for years, but the last couple of seasons I had been fighting failure to fire or feed. I believe the fail to fire issue was because of inadequate bolt lock-up, which has been fixed. Failure to feed is still an issue.

I going to guess that the feed ramp isn’t lifting the shell high enough. I’d pull the trigger assembly out and examine the carrier spring (#21). It may be worn and not actuating the carrier lever (feed ramp) correctly.

I'll check that out. It doesn't really "jam", I can still manually operate the bolt and it picks up the shell fine.

The brass lip appears to be hitting the ramp about where the leader is for #17.

Yes. Also replaced it fairly recently.

I forgot to follow-up on this. Replacing the carrier spring as suggested by @Ringbill27 solved the problem. It runs smoothly once again.

Now... If only there were some ducks around to shoot at.

Glad I could help. Now the real question. Where are you still attempting to shoot ducks?

Minnesota has been closed for a month now. I’d like to do a new years hunt somewhere next year.

Colorado is open through the end of January and our goose season runs through mid-February.

Most years we have quite a few birds along the Platte River after Thanksgiving. If I were planning a trip, I would look at southwestern Nebraska.

North or South. Honestly, it would probably be most worthwhile to book a couple of days guided and then hunt on your own a bit.
