Atkins or similar low carb change in eating habits worked well for me. I lost 50 pounds in 4 months and have kept it off for over four years. Diets have peaks and valleys.....this is a lifestyle change.
Cutting out carbs was huge for me. Its easy to make spaghetti, tacos, etc that have tons of carbs, so alternative meals was a must, especially if you are not burning them off for the day. I love beer and mostly scotch ales and that was my biggest downfall. As of a week ago I cut my carbs way down and completely stopped drinking. It wasn't easy, but if you really want to do/be better, it can be done. Just being more conscious of what you are eating and how much will help a lot, as opposed to totally stopping the way you are eating.
