I recently made another post about 3rd vs 4th rifle...Now, I am contemplating archery.

I am an avid bowhunter and have hunted archery elk in Colorado and Wyoming for the past seven years. I am passionate about archery and shoot my bow regularly. I will hunt a high country deer hunt one year, but not sure if this should be the year. I am now throwing the idea of burning my points for an archery hunt compared to a rifle hunt.

I am torn. Part of me wants to burn my points on a very good unit for archery, that I most likely will never be able to draw for rifle. The other part of me isn't sure if I would be doing the tag "justice," as it would be my first go at high country deer.

I really have nobody to bounce this stuff off if in my "circle" and am resorting to some of you high country hunters for advice.

But for the record, I will definitely be coming to Colorado for a deer hunt this fall!

I'd suggest not burning a bunch of points on archery. Stalking mule deer is a viciously steep learning curve that most never begin to grasp. If you want to start to learn to archery hunt mule deer, go to a 0 point unit for a few years first and decide if that's what you want to burn points on.

Thank you for this. Deep down I know this is the right approach, good to hear from someone else.

agree, or a state like MT, you could draw at 50% the first year, and 100% the third year if you miss. Lots of options to hunt mule deer and keep your points.
I burned my co deer points, but I mostly archery hunt and don't have any plans of waiting out co for a great tag.

Either way you decide, make sure you understand the upcoming changes coming in 2028. I’d expect alot of people to burn their points on more medium point level tags before the changes are implemented

Watch every video that south cox has out. That sneaky little ninja is showing you how to do it.

I agree with this. I used to say if south can kill a deer at ten with a stick then i can kill one at 40 with a compound.

I think he has some of the best videos showing what its really like to hunt high country muleys. If you’ve been bow hunting for 7 years, i think youll be fine. I say send it!
