I just had a kid about 7 months ago and moving into summer im being kicked to the deck of my boat to sleep during camping trips. Looking for a bedroll setup with a waterproof exterior so that it can ride on the front of my boat without getting wet. So far I have found a few options below.

I like the born outdoors the best but at $900 before shipping and taxes it doesnt make sense to me. My second choice would be the wildland pro bedrolls and just piece the rest of the components myself for half the cost of the born outdoors. Canvas cutter is another obvious choice but the lighter option that stores smaller is only offered in a tapered footprint. I've also thought about just buying the born outdoor footprint but thats $500 by the time its shipped and taxed.

Im looking for 30" wide by at least 78" long that is waterproof when stored and rolls up fairly small. Looking to use a thermarest mondoking or nemo roamer pad rather than foam for storage purposes. Am I missing any other brands out there that would be comparable?

I question the sauna/condensation comfort of a Canvas Cutter with the bonded urethane. I've never stayed in one though.

If you wanted to try a Butler Bag and are passing through Denver soon, you can grab mine. To satisfy the boat ride it would just need an added dry bag. I think @Justin Crossley has one en route soon to play around with.

I saw a previous post of yours about the butler in my research. At $450 shipped with taxes im not far off from the born outdoors which i prefer. The marine grade canvas is a plus however.

All the bedrolls are about the same. Any quality canvas tent company and even something like Born will all do well. The canvas cutter is unique with the pole system. It’s really a decision if you want the poles or not. Maybe a Kodiak Canvas Swag just to throw in the mix.

Mine is great; comfortable enough that me and my brothers chose it over the spare bed for a few weeks of our dad's at home hospice care.

The getting wet part is throwing me for a loop with your needs. Canvas does well if water can roll off of it, but I wouldn't fully trust it in full drench or if water sits on it for a few hours.

Its going to be riding on the front of a boat and will at somepoint get sprayed consistently with water.

Yes, I'm waiting for mine to be shipped. Looking forward to comparing it to the Born Outdoor Badger Bed and the Canvas Cutter.

Waterproof and bedrolls don’t go together, that thing needs to breathe. In your case, just need to get a waterproof storage bag.

These things aren’t rocket science and there’s no need to pay a small fortune for one. Go to Big Duck Canvas and order yourself a few yards of #10 duck canvas. I make my sleeping pads out of memory foam mattress toppers. Use sheets, blankets, or an Apex quilt depending on temps. Wrap up in the canvas and call it good.

On really cold nights put your pad on a 45 degree to the canvas sheet, so you’ll have an extra flap over your feet and two layers over top.

If you go with the Badger, check out Lost Horizon air mattresses. They are much cheaper and have a model that fits the Badger bedroll. It’s got the foam in it and it’s very comfortable. I only have a few nights in mine but I don’t see any reason why it won’t last a long time.

I’m more curious why you have to sleep on the deck of your boat. Do you live on a boat? Do you camp on a boat? Can you not sleep in the same bed as the wife?

Boat camping. With this being our first child I know for a fact we are going to bring more crap then we could ever need. The cabin is fairly large but I don’t want all three of us sleeping in there.

I’m more than happy to sleep under the stars and do regularly. However to have a bedroll ready to go that I can just unclip and throw anywhere sounds appealing.

I’m also trying to avoid filling the cabin with sleep gear and kid crap as both of them will want to be napping during the day while I’m fishing/galavanting

Overtime we will dial in what we need but regardless the kids are sleeping in the cabin and dad is happy on the deck.

I will agree it’s nice to have a comfortable bedroll. I use mine a lot, most recently for one of my kids on the floor of a packed hotel room.

Needing waterproof storage makes a little more sense after seeing those pictures.

2 yards of HyperD 300 from Ripstop by the Roll and 2 yards of #10 canvas from Big Duck canvas will cost < $75. Gets you a waterproof bathtub floor and a breathable canvas over sheet. Get someone local to sew it for you. Throw a memory foam pad in there and you’re good to go!

I’ve got a Badger Bed from bornoutdoor.com and I can’t say enough about it! It simply works. The challenge with a waterproof top is that it traps all your body moisture. The breathable top layer of the Born bedroll is breathable so I wake up comfortable and not all clammy. I saw James Nash on Instagram (6ranchoutfitter) have a video of his fishing camp and he brings his Badger Bed on the river. I often sleep on the ground or just on a cot and have a MSR tarp in my bag if it looks like it might rain.

Im not looking for the entire bedroll to be waterproof. Just when its rolled and stored...

With that said I ended up buying the bedroll shell from born outdoors to try during their recent sale. Ill post back with some of my thoughts after I get some real world testing done with it. So far there are things I like alot and some things I dont like.

Additionally, what is your affiliation with the brand? all 15 of your posts are in regards to this particular bedroll.

I have a canvas cutter dominator.
I’ve mostly used it in the canopy of my truck. But on the ground a few times.

Never had an issue.
I did finally tear a little hole in it catching on something. But it’s spent months and months in my truck bed rolling around.

The zippers definitely are not waterproof they are ment to have the flap over them so the water runs off/over the zipper.

I like the standard pole over the full pole.
But I hardly use it with poles or zipped up.

I usually leave it flipped back by my head and only zip up if it starts to sprinkle.

I’ve had it long enough I think it was basically the only thing on the market 5 plus yrs ago, so not sure if I’d look at other stuff now or not.

I also had a Montana canvas bed rolling around and that would be more of a fair weather/containment roll then a stand alone imo
We used it inside the tent/trailer for warmth

Fair question. I'm a simply a huge fan of the product and I don't have any affiliation with Born Outdoor. Met Stuart and his wife at an Overland Expo event in Loveland a few years back when I bought my bedroll. They are good people and have a great product that has made my camping so much more comfortable. They are a small company I just want to do my part to help get the word out there. Look forward to hearing how it works out for your. I'm on Rokslide because I always find hunter's gear reviews the best because they really work their gear and give real world feedback.
