I'm an engineer, not a shift worker, but I concur that you shouldn't do it if not 100% for the right reasons.

I've had stints as an acting manager. You will definitely lose friends, and have to deal with nonsense that is currently hidden from you. I've learned it's not for me, because I don't have enough sympathy for people's self-focused attitudes.

When I first got into leadership roles I was young, immature, and I am embarrassed of how I acted. I was doing it for the wrong reasons and I have tried my best to make amends with people that I mistreated.

I have read through this thread and I think @Finch, if you take the promotion it will be for the right reasons. I think you already know what you need to do.

If you take the promotion don't let your head get too big for your hardhat and you wont lose those friendships.

If you don't take it give your new boss the respect you would have wanted.

Good Luck!
