Just got last years black bear hide & skull back. This bear somehow completely snapped it's lower jaw and managed to live long enough for it to heal. Here is a picture of the finished skull.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1401221556.730369.jpg

did you see any indication of the break when you first shot and skinned the bear?

No, we were actually heading back in after a week of hunting when I saw it on a slide. I rushed to get it skinned, quartered and sealed before we had to head back to Kodiak so I never noticed.

I was thinking maybe he got too close to a cow moose and caught a hoof to the jaw

Here's an alaska black bear from few years ago. Game and fish claims it's over 20 year old. With the amount of cavities, had to be painful even eating those soft tidal greens and kelp!
