I carry two cans of bear spray when I'm in the woods where grizzly bears roam.
I can't express it enough, when in the bear woods keep your head on a swivel and all of your senses at 9-0.
I had a close call this past Spring, while I was hunting black bear next to the Canadian border. I was walking up this two track road heading to the border. I was hunting all by myself. I stopped for a moment to take a break; I was looking at these two large slash-piles. I was thinking this would make a good den for a bear.
The woods were very quiet, no wind moving as I could tell.
About this time, I heard a twig snap. I thought Oh Shit! This twig snap came from behind me, so I was turning around, about the time I got turned; I could hear what sounded like a very large animal getting up out of its bed. I heard a very load deep sounding growl. I stayed focused on the direction of the growl about now, I hear what sounded like large jaws snapping together with huffing. I estimated this noise was maybe 15-20 feet away from me. It was a very thick forest. (Jungle)
It's amazing how fast to check you innovatory of certain items. I had my Glock on a chest rig holster, bear spray just as close, with my rifle in my hand.
I pulled my bear spray out of its holster; it was ready to rock with my rifle in my other hand.
I just slowly backed up and out of that area and never did see this bear, that was okay by me at this time.
Just aways stay ready for any encounter, we just never know what may happen in the woods.
Take care.
