I'm not sure where this post belongs, so I'll drop it here. Heading to grizzly country for an Elk hunt later this year. I will be packing in bear spray and a side arm. Are all bear sprays built the same? I have never used it, and plan to buy a few so I can practice deployment

I appreciate any advice.

I was in the same situation but it was fishing in Alaska. I also bought some canisters to experiment with and was kinda shocked at how limited the distance the spray went out.

I think Gear Junkie did some testing and published recommendations

I would HIGHLY suggest not deploying real bear spray for practice.

Go on Amazon and order a 2 pack of "Practice" bear spray, which I believe is just water in the same can with the same charge.

Yes ... I should have clarified that I plan to deploy the practice units. Although, I have read that it may be useful to deploy an older canister ... ones you aren't quite sure work... just so you know what you're getting into. Make sure you are upwind

Any reason other than the chance of getting a whiff of it blown back in the face?

I have a can that I’ve been carrying for about 5 years that is expired. I realize the expiration is probably mostly meaningless, but I plan on carrying a newer can to minimize chances of something going wrong. I figured this gives me a good excuse to practice a discharge.

If you use a real can be sure its not in an area others will be using. It lingers for days as its in an oil base and doesn't readily wash off

It's my understanding to know what the discharge is like as well as knowing of the strength of the discharge. I can't remember where I saw it, but it discussed situations where the bear was too close and it caused issues with the person discharging it. Obviously, you need to do it safely

Would imagine you would have to think through where you discharge it…

The College wrestlers had it in the bottom of their pack. That didn't work out well.

I keep mine on my bino harness.

Is that the attack from a few years ago in MT when they were out scouting or what not? Sad either way though.

Is this an archery hunt or are you planning on carrying a rifle, pistol, and spray? If that's the case, just pick two. Rifle and spray would be my choice.
