I have a collection of bear spray from when visitors come to Montana and leave them. I had one in a car during the summer and it leaked a tiny bit and was overwhelming when I got in the car. I have heard it is not good to leave them in freezing temp. So, extreme hot and cold can degrade them from what I have seen and heard. I keep them stored inside in a closet and don't have much hesitation about carrying a can thats a few years past it’s expiration date.

I also blow off a can every once in a while for practice since I have enough that I don’t mind using one now and again.

There are two answers…

just spray it downward, onto the ground away from you and stay upwind…

Or, if you really want to get all official…the technically correct answer is to get a 5 gallon bucket of soapy water, glove up, hold the canister 6 inches below the surface, and spray it. No airborne anything. Then pour water out.

Full disclosure…LEO, had to dispose of a lot of expired OC spray.
