Does anyone bait and not cover it with logs? I’ve always cut logs to put over top of my bait to keep coons out. They seem to get in there anyway makes me think it isn’t worth the time involved

I've been baiting for 3 years in NH and ME, so I'm not an expert. I did it part of the first year and never again. I have coons hammer my baits too, but it only all adds up to maybe 1/2 a barrel all season on each site, so it's not worth my effort. My experience has been that they really like the scented grease. Last year they ate about a cubic yard of dirt at one of my sites and that's not an exaggeration. I had to cut a tree out at ground level, so I have a good sense of volume. It's now a stump.

The coons and such are going to get in there regardless, but the logs make it easier to see if there was a bear in the bait. The coons aren't going to be moving some big, heavy logs. Even if you have a timid bear that comes in and doesn't eat much of the bait, you can see if the logs are out of place.
