As the title says,

We rebaited Saturday morning. Left to go to an archery shoot came back to sit the night and someone in that amount of time set their barrel up within 100 yards of ours.

Now you can’t see our barrel from theirs due to the amount of timber. So I’m unsure if this was intentional or not.

We sit out truck in this turnout so if you drive up the canyon you pass our truck. I’m fully aware that it’s public land. I get it. But there is a sense of ethics and morals that come to place.

I’m guessing it’s a hounds man’s barrel due to the lack of “decorating” as I call it.

My guess, they seen where the truck was and decided to blindly set their new barrel in there trying to pull a bear in with less amount of time.

Here’s the kicker, their barrel is in fact illegal due to the distance from a maintained trail by 50 yards. Ours is 75 over the minimum.

What would you do in this situation?

shitty situation for sure. I would leave a note in hopes it was accidental. I ran bait last year and before any bears came in I captured an obvious hunter on camera walking through where my bait was set. I was a little uneasy , but understood it was on public land. As soon as I had a bears hitting the bait I also had another hunter sitting directly above my bait & he was able to slip an arrow into my target bear as he came into feed one night. I was convinced the hunter knew he was sitting on my bait, but it is possible he spot and stalked the bear without any knowledge of my bait. regardless to say I abandoned my bait and shot a better bear on a much more fun spot and stalk hunt up at about 9k. best of luck resolving this situation.

You might try leaving a note on his barrel with your name and number and see if he calls you back.

There is a possibility that he has no idea your barrel is there or that "you were there first". You said it is thick and your barrel can't be seen.

True. Thanks guys. Bears are starting to finally hit my barrel. I’ll leave a note and see what he says.
