How much can barrel/stock contact affect accuracy? Is it very important that a barrel does not contact the stock at all? Is contact right in front of the action acceptable? Will it effect accuracy more the further down the barrel it contacts?

Hard to predict because you’re dealing with harmonics and barrel whip and everything from charge weight to caliber to bullet weight and barrel length will affect it. Sometimes a contact point at the right spot can settle a barrel. But because it’s so hard to predict it’s best to have the ENTIRE barrel free floated. I have zero contact from the action face forward. It can take a 1/4MOA gun and make it a 2 moa gun.

I recently had a 6creed that wasn’t shooting too great, about 3/4MOA. Found a TINY contact point on the barrel tennon right in front of the action, at the 6;00 position. Sanded it out and the gun put down 5 groups in a row that were all less than .31” and the smallest was .23”. It makes a difference.

I have two rifles that are bedded up to 1" forward of the recoil lug, and they are both great shooters.
