Barnes or Hammer or........

so do you have any actual experience with monos and low impact velocity?
I know you didn't ask me, but I have some data points with Hammers out to 650 yards. I wouldn't call the velocity low, lowest impact velocity was 2050 fps or so. That was the lowest I was willing to push them, and the farthest I was willing to shoot. Good performance, pedal shedding etc. For what it's worth.

No not really. I have been happy with the Barnes performance but.......thinking of trying others. I have read the posts on the Scenar 155 and may try them to.

I may need to go lead if I do not load hot. Talker to Hammer and they said above 1800fps it would perform. I have yet to talk to Barnes. I am wanting to stay at or below 2400-2500fps max. Looking for low recoil for hunting with grandchildren.
Depending on the distance I'd consider Nosler 125gr Ballistic Tips for your grand kids. Nosler beefed up the jackets on the BT's when the Ultra Mags came into existence. If you aren't shooting more than 300 yards I've had several buddies take elk with the 165gr Partitions. From what I've read the ELDM's would work fine with your MV. Your grandkids would get to practice much more shooting lead bullets instead of monos. Or it would be far less expensive to shoot.

Gel is not terribly comparable to animals in my opinion. Monos are not the bullet of choice for longer range hunting, the right lead bullet though can be deadly at some extreme ranges
Can I ask what manufacturers and hobbyists should use to test expansion other than gel? What would you use instead? Serious question.

I live in California in an area where feral hogs are prevalent, the hogs are thick skinned and big boned. If you get desired results shooting at hogs you should be good to go for most other species. But manufacturers could shoot animals in high fence situations on game and at distance to show real world expansion and penetration.

I’ve been shooting Barnes for years, I have guns .270, .308, set up to shoot the TSX and guns .338win, 7mm set up for the TTSX as well as a 6.5 Sweedish Mauser with the LRX have had nothing but good things to say about them all. I do have a 6.5 creedmore that does not like the 127gn LRX bullet, need to try some of the TTSX options in it to see if they will group. With that being said in all my hunting situations the Barnes bullets have performed.

Try the 100 or 120 TTSX

Manufacturers should shoot live high fenced animals.
Most states would be illegal, cost a fortune, and cause a public outcry possibly harming the industry but definitely harming the manufacturer.

Or test on ballistic gel.

I'll pipe in for @Formidilosus since I have asked the same Q multiple times ... DRT ...

I did, but only just started, so one deer. very effective. Not a great shot placement, and still went about 20yds and piled up. I shoot the 135 out of my 65CM. I was shooting the 124 Hammer Hunter before that. Hammer was exponentially easier to load though.

The hammers are definitely the easiest bullet to load and get something that shoots 5 shots under 1 moa, usually close to half moa

124gr .30cal hammer hunters have done very well on pigs thermal hunting at close ranges 50-200yds from 3050-3150fps. Always have exits with a lot of blood.
Even shot 1 pig with a 100gr hammer at 2500fps out of a ruger bolt gun in 300blk out at 50 yards in the vitals. Ran 75 yards with a good blood trail, full pass through on a 200lb sow. Wasn’t near as devastating as the 124s at 3050 though.

Barnes 85gr in a 16” 243win kill well too. Have some 69gr hammers loaded at 3400fps for that gun to, as well as the 88gr sledge hammers loaded to 2900fps.

Just recently I’ve been shooting the newer high bc line. 69.5gr hammer HBC’s at 3500fps out of my 18” 22creed. I’ve loaded hammers in quite a few calibers they get great velocity and shoot well with almost no load dev. I just find the pressure I want to run at. Also their absolute line gives you an extra 100fps, I’ve tested it in 25cal. Ran 92hammer hunters at 3650 and 90gr absolutes at 3780fps. Also ran 67gr sledge hammers at 4200fps in a 26” 25SST.

Not to mention the owners seems like great guys out of Montana. Steve has been very helpful over the years and has always answered the phone and e-mail.

If I find factory ammo with barnes bullets at a cheap price I won’t hesitate to buy some and use it for short to mid range but if I’m hand loading monos it’s hammer all the way.

Are you guys cleaning the bore of copper first if shooting lead core bullets then switching to monos?
