I know you didn't ask me, but I have some data points with Hammers out to 650 yards. I wouldn't call the velocity low, lowest impact velocity was 2050 fps or so. That was the lowest I was willing to push them, and the farthest I was willing to shoot. Good performance, pedal shedding etc. For what it's worth.so do you have any actual experience with monos and low impact velocity?
Depending on the distance I'd consider Nosler 125gr Ballistic Tips for your grand kids. Nosler beefed up the jackets on the BT's when the Ultra Mags came into existence. If you aren't shooting more than 300 yards I've had several buddies take elk with the 165gr Partitions. From what I've read the ELDM's would work fine with your MV. Your grandkids would get to practice much more shooting lead bullets instead of monos. Or it would be far less expensive to shoot. No not really. I have been happy with the Barnes performance but.......thinking of trying others. I have read the posts on the Scenar 155 and may try them to.
I may need to go lead if I do not load hot. Talker to Hammer and they said above 1800fps it would perform. I have yet to talk to Barnes. I am wanting to stay at or below 2400-2500fps max. Looking for low recoil for hunting with grandchildren.
Can I ask what manufacturers and hobbyists should use to test expansion other than gel? What would you use instead? Serious question.Gel is not terribly comparable to animals in my opinion. Monos are not the bullet of choice for longer range hunting, the right lead bullet though can be deadly at some extreme ranges
I live in California in an area where feral hogs are prevalent, the hogs are thick skinned and big boned. If you get desired results shooting at hogs you should be good to go for most other species. But manufacturers could shoot animals in high fence situations on game and at distance to show real world expansion and penetration. Can I ask what manufacturers and hobbyists should use to test expansion other than gel? This!i was using 124 hammer hunters in my 308 before going to .243. if i was looking for lighter recoil in a 308, i'd go with 124 hammers, 125 nosler BTs, or 130 TTSX.
Try the 100 or 120 TTSXI’ve been shooting Barnes for years, I have guns .270, .308, set up to shoot the TSX and guns .338win, 7mm set up for the TTSX as well as a 6.5 Sweedish Mauser with the LRX have had nothing but good things to say about them all. I do have a 6.5 creedmore that does not like the 127gn LRX bullet, need to try some of the TTSX options in it to see if they will group. With that being said in all my hunting situations the Barnes bullets have performed.

I'll pipe in for @Formidilosus since I have asked the same Q multiple times ... DRT ...I live in California in an area where feral hogs are prevalent, the hogs are thick skinned and big boned. Have you ever used the drt bullets? If so how did they work on game for youI'll pipe in for @Formidilosus since I have asked the same Q multiple times ... DRT ...
The hammers are definitely the easiest bullet to load and get something that shoots 5 shots under 1 moa, usually close to half moaI did, but only just started, so one deer. very effective. Not a great shot placement, and still went about 20yds and piled up. I shoot the 135 out of my 65CM. I was shooting the 124 Hammer Hunter before that. Hammer was exponentially easier to load though.

I'll echo this. I started using them, for terminal performance from a non-lead bullet, they are hands down the best. If I can't use those for some reason, I use apex.I'll pipe in for @Formidilosus since I have asked the same Q multiple times ... DRT ...
