Barnes 160 LRX in 7PRC

Just shot my first handloads with the 160 LRX's out of my 7 PRC Springfield 2020 Boundary yesterday.

ADG brass with Federal 215m primers and a C.O.A.L. of 3.325"

load 1- 70.5 gr of H-1000 velocity was 3090, 3107, 3127 fps with a 1.8" group at 200 yards.

load 2- 66.7 gr of Reloader 26 velocity was 3106, 3103, 3112 fps with a 1.5" at 200 yards.

I only have 22 rounds down the barrel so I'm assuming velocity may increase as round count goes up.
The barnes factory ammo was shooting 3" groups @200 in the gun but i really wanted to shoot this bullet due to the fact that i live in Commifornia and have to shoot unleaded bullets.

5 or 10 shot groups?

Fact that you have RL26 puts you in the “unicorn reloader” category…

I got lucky and found an 8lb jug at Sportsmans Warehouse a few years ago. They had 2 of them and I wish I had bought both of them but at least i still have about 5 lbs left.

Just 3 shot groups for now to check for pressure but will load more up and start shooting 5 shot groups when the weather clears up.

10-4. Once you get a load, I’ll be real curious to 10 round group results.

I think I’m gonna do a bigger sample at 2 or maybe 3 different charges and see where it goes based on sd’s. May need more time between shots. I am shooting suppressed and finding suppressor mirage to be a thing. I will go back with fewer recipes and more time and see what changes.

My final load for the 160LRX is 66gr of H4832SC and a whopping .1325 off the lands! This load is generating 3050 out of a 22" C6 barrel. For sight in I ran two 7 shot groups at 100 yards. First group was .61 MOA with a MR of .23. Second group on a subsequent day was .97 MOA with a MR of .37. I also did a 3 shot sight in verification on a third day. That was .58 MOA and a MR of .3 . As these groups had different aim points so I cannot do a 17 shot composite. But based on the individual group results I am pretty happy with it. Although after using the bullet on an Auodad hunt in January I am not sure I would use a Barnes type solid again unless I had to. I find the Cutting Edge Bullets shearing type solids to be more effective in terminal results.

PS - I did not get satisfactory results with H1000.

Interesting thanks. I’ll keep messing around with it. I sure hope i come up with something that groups well. I have invested mostly in H1000.

What dies are people here using, and are special seater stems needed?

I usually use regular Redding full length but I see there’s a VLD stem that only works in their competition dies.

Bringing this back up since I was able to start shooting these yesterday. Using H1000, ADG brass, Fed215 primers and seated .050 off the lands. Rifle is a Weatherby 307 XP 22" barrel. Started @ 69.5gr going up in half grain increments to 71.0, which is .2 under book max.
The 71gr load really blew the group open, with 1 landing off the paper.

Still more testing to be done. I have H4831sc, Retumbo & Magpro to try, but I'm thinking at least with this, I need to adjust seating depth a little deeper. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Friends,
is anyone showing data that contradicts the published BC on this bullet?

I’ve had good luck with H1000. 71 grains under a 160 LRX in a Hornady case with a CCI #250 gives me an average velocity of 2989 fps and half inch groups at 100 yds out of a Browning X bolt with 24” barrel.

My only complaint is bullet expansion after killing a nice cow elk on the first this month with it, first animal taken with an LRX. Hit her dead center behind the shoulder as she was quartered away from me at 50 yards, bullet exited the front of the opposing shoulder and you could solidly plug the exit hole with your index finger. We found several petals that had come off as it passed through the chest cavity. She ran about 100 yards and there was no blood for the first 40-50 yards, then very little after, when she did start bleeding. I’ve killed dozens of deer and elk with TTSXs and they all performed flawlessly. Hoping this was a fluke with the LRX.
