What's a good 2 person backpacking tent ?

Well Welcome to the boards cjleon23. Youll want to figure out what your budget is first then focus on lightweight and comfort. Alot of the guys on Rokslide who use tents swear by the Big Agnes Copper tents. It gives you a bit of both worlds comfort and lightweight. Id say a better part of folks on here use Kifaru Tarps. If your ok with a floorless design and your on a budget then check out the Mountainsmith Mountain LT. its 54 sqaure feet and can fit 2 comfortably and weighs in at 2lbs. Campmor has this Tarp for 109$. Kifaru tarp will run you 500 for a Sawtooth, or the Coppper SL2 will run you 300$

What's a good 2 person backpacking tent ?

Another option is the GoLite Sl3. Can be a traditional two wall tent, bug net and bathtub floor only, or give you the option to try floorless with just the fly. All for $250. Lots of versatility for the dollar.

I love my MSR Cabon Reflex 2 for a tradition style tent, pretty tough to beat the Kifaru shelters thou....

x2! This was my whole setup.

I actually went from my MSR Carbon to the Kifaru completely this year. Its personal preference but for a tent, the MSR is awesome.

The Kifaru tarps work well for everything if you get the stove and annex.

For a lightweight two person tent, checkout www.tarptent.com. They are really light and the prices are good. The Golight Shangri La 3 would also be a great option.

It was worth a try anyway!! I to am in the market for a 2 person backpacking tent but not at the 300-500$ price range.

They work great without a stove. You would be surprised how quickly a wet ground dries once you pitch the tarp. I would add a lightweight bivy or tyvek ground sheet for your pad if you go that route.

I would rather go with a tent, since I know nothing about the tarps.

If that is the case I would take a look at Hilleberg tents. They are super bomb proof and their new anjan series is fairly light weight. I have also heard some good things about Easton tents msr and big agnes.

I just picked up a Scarp 2 from Tarptent and will have it out for its first over night trip next week. Hopefully next month it will be out in the high country of Wyoming getting put to the test. There is a decent amount of room for two people in this tent from what I have seen.

x2 on the tarp tent. some pretty great options and at a price that's relatively easy to get into. I run a squall 2, my next purchase is going to be a floorless set up. either a used supertarp with annex or the SL3 mentioned here

Tarps are not that different really. The Kifaru tarps are like a tent without a floor.

The Golite Shangri La 3 or 5 will give you a lot of room for a little weight and are really cheap IMO.

The Hillabergs are awesome tents but kinda heavy and cost a lot. The Nallo GT 3 on the left. One man Tarptent on the right.


This is my setup for this year. Very lightweight!
