Haven’t done much lately, but been back packing in the Allegheny national forest for almost 30 years. My buddy has a camp by Tionesta off of route 666 right by the flying W ranch. The deer hunting has really gotten good up there and the bear hunting also.

Flying W is nice, I had family from Tionesta at one time.

Actually after looking at the numbers it’s very big for the east, now some of the 500 some thousand is oil lease but the oil is very low right now I’m told so I imagine less oil traffic

I've done a bit in White Mountain NP in NH, and I'm headed up there tomorrow for a couple days.

Early season is tough - visibility in most places is about 30 yards at best. I have a couple timber cuts, from 2-8 years old, that I've hunted before. My plan is to head to those and look for fresh sign. Maybe put my saddle in a tree on the edge of a fresher cut and glass.

Downside is that NH requires check-in of the deer, and it can't be quartered. So getting a whole 200lb buck 1000-2000 feet down a mountain that is so thick you can't walk 10 yards in a straight line, by myself, would... suck.

I find that any ‘Eastern’ State that holds a decent black bear population/ has Sasquatch sightings...yes lol... holds some form of Backcountry

Didn't Discovery or one of those channels do a Bigfoot sighting show up near where you guys are talking? Maybe it was Bradford.

Do you have a reference for that in the regs? Just curious because I have packed out deer and bear in Nh and registration didn't have a problem. I'm not unique in packing them out of the white mountains.

I backpack in for the vast majority of hunting I do, save some small game. We backpack in for turkeys every year on Pisgah NF here in WNC, and I also am dabbling with backpacking in for some whitetail and bear hunts this year on NF. We have a late season archery buck only season that runs the last 2 weeks of December that I will be backpacking in for. I prefer to do it that way, gotta change my turkey spots though, past 2 years folks have been coming in on us.

Cohutta Wilderness in N Ga has some nasty terrain and definitely middle of nowhere feel. Game densities are pretty low but can be a mixed bag of wild pig, black bear and deer and turkey. Cool place

Unfortunately they did. It was a mockery though, bunch of idiots roaming around hitting trees and whooping. No real study, I’m not saying these things are there im just saying that’s not how you look for a creature. Lots of relevant information out there.

I do a lot of this type of hunting. It's fun, it's challenging, and it eliminates 99% of other hunters. In fact, I'd go so far as to say when hunting like this, if you do run into someone else they generally tend to be cut from the same cloth and it isn't a bad thing at all. My gear is very similar to what I use when I hunt out west with only a few exceptions.

Yup, I live near Brockway in Jefferson county so a little bit south of the Allegheny national forest. I'm super interested in doing some backpack hunt type stuff close to home. We should get together later this year.
Hey man, Brookville here, I do a little as it is and I'm familiar with a little bit of the area. Always down for some new hunting buddies!

I deer hunt in Lycoming County. We sometimes hunt 17000 acres of state land. Used to be great but the state timbered part of it several years ago and fenced part of it in for "study". Actually took the tree I set my stand on for years and put a fence around in the ravine. The fence is gone and the area is coming back and we are hunting it again. Road gates are closed now, so we have to hike up and in a few miles to get to where we hunt. I used to kill a buck every year.

Bro, I’m from right on the edge of the Allegheny ..... I’m in Colorado right now and will be through 2nd Rifle as well as will be hitting the Allegheny doing Backcountry stuff at least the next 5 years maybe more..... are you from the area?
I'm in Brookville and plan on exclusively hunting the ANF this year (done with leasing after I discovered how great the hunting is once you get just a little further in past the easy access stuff) and can always use some new hunting buddies if you ever wanna throw up a camp.
