Just buy the Saker and be done with it. You get three bags in one! And in a pinch you’ll have about two thirds of a bivvy!!!

Really appreciate everyone's input. Between the Lanner and the Goshawk, I get that there's a 600cu in difference. Are there any other standout things that make the Lanner a more appealing pack?

It depends. Some people do not like the compression panel of the Goshawk style design. The Lanner is drop dead simple with really no fiddle and turns into a day pack really well. I love the 3 pocket design on the back, it worked really well for me hunting. However, the Goshawk can do anything. If I were a customer, I may go with a Goshawk / Merlin and consider it a do all solution that works really well, but has a little more fiddle. If I just wanted a pack for backpack hunting, and did not care about a separate daypack, or daypack on the frame, I would go Lanner. For me, it really is pretty much a tossup. Personally, this year I was on the fence, I basically flipped a coin on which one I was going to use. The Lanner has a little more volume, but the compression panel of a Goshawk adds more volume.

Isn't there some saying, 2 out of 3 ain't bad?

It would be nice to be in your position; being able to take either or for a spin. Generally i feel like more simple is the way to go. But I'm also a sucker for that shiney object and get sucked in to feature rich items, despite only ever using 1 or 2 of them. Like all the fancy stuff on a new car that never gets used.

We just try to meet different needs and preferences with solid designs that don't need to be changed often. We prefer continuous improvement over design obsolescence .. and we can mostly satisfy goldilocks through the custom shop.

I like the height of the side pockets on the Lanner as well as the overall design of the pack.

Lanner if you like pick up and go style.

Goshawk/Fortress if you don't mind it being a little 'strappy" but also having customization.

Initially when I received my goshawk, it was a lot to process compared to say, my Exo K2. But, once you parse through it, and after some discussions with Kevin, it's really something you can customize. The one thing I will say is that the SO Goshawk does feel a bit more strap intense when empty, but when loaded it all makes a lot more sense. I'd fill it when exploring any strap configurations to see what you like best.

That's also the reason I think the Merlin is a great option. I will probably have to pick up the spectraHT one when it comes out.

Kevin -- Any plans to offer the Merlin in X-Pac or no?

That "2 out of 3" comment wasn't a shot at you, Kevin. I was trying to piggy back on the 2/3 bivy joke.

Thanks, CJ.

I have been thinking of ordering custom Saker. I would go with a Lanner side pocket on the left and normal Saker pocket on the right.
I like the idea of using the Lanner side pocket for a tripod and trekking poles and anything else that can get wet/ dirty and then using the Saker pocket for quick access items.
The Lanner pocket is on the left because I sling my rifle on the right hand side and don't want it clanging into the tripod.

See Goldilocks .. not that it is a problem. The final 5 percent of the perfect pack for most people is personal preference so we call it goldilocks.

Merlin in Xpac , unlikely. Xpac is stiffer and does not get compressed as small as smoothly. The Spectra, is pretty much waterproof .. more than many a tent .. .. and I was informed they are ready they just need photos for the site. Plus the Spectra is quieter for stalks and super good for scrambling .

No worries on the 2 out of 3 ... I'm not super sensitive socially to take offense to much. You need a bit of thick skin in this field. We just try to keep doing what we think makes the best products.

Most folks, once they figure out our packs really like them. They are different but we did not set out to make the same thing. We felt what was available had some shortcoming when it came to what we wanted in a backpack hunting backpack at seek outside.

Are there any pictures of the Goshawk/Lanner/fortress/Saker side by side, compressed or otherwise?
Anyone have any of these packs (or others) in daypack mode that hold the larger loads? My quick internet query did not yield any results.

Can the Merlin run on the frame With the load shelf by itself? From the site it looks like you can, just want to confirm. One of the things I just realized is that if I’m running a Merlin without a load shelf, and I Am fortunate enough to kill something a few miles from camp, even a mile, I don’t think I’d be too happy running back just to get a way to carry my meat...

You can run the merlin on the frame no issue.

The rest should have photos in day pack mode on their photos or in the videos. They all go flat or nearly flat. It just depends what access you prefer.

Kevin from Seek Outside here.

2. A Spectra version with waterproof zips and zipper garage is in process. They are in production but not on the site .

Not that I'm hoping for mistakes, but any chance there may be some factory blems showing up?

Of the Spectra or in General ? In general we do have some blems and probably a little bit of 2019 around. Send an email to our info email. Of the Spectra Merlin ... I hope not.
