Forgive my ignorance here. I found a backcountry beaver pond that looked full of trout last spring. I plan on hitting it this spring. As well as the small creek that feeds it.

Can you recommend me a decent backcountry rod and reel combo. And also what size color jigs? I had access to a lot of panther martins from my brother.

Thanks.

A multipiece -aka travel rod-and ultralight reel. I have a Diawa Presso 4 piece rod that I like. Several small spinning reels out there like Okuma Ceymar work well with a travel spinning rod. Don't overlook a Tenkara if you don't need to cast more than 15 feet or so.

I recently bought a shimano ultralight reel that I have been happy with. Rods can vary, ugly stiks are durable if you want to save some money.

Swing by walmart and buy a lil flimsy pos rod. That way when you break it going through the brush or close the door on the thing, you wont care. You dont need leaders, or swivels an such. Spool up a smaller reel with 4lb test and call it done.

I like little panther martins the best. Black/gold and yellow/silver seem to get it done the most.

Lil hard sided flybox makes a dandy minature tackle box..

Bring an assortment- a few panther martins, a couple spoons- one gold one silver maybe a flash of orange on it, maybe a small rapala (dynamic lures makes nice ones) in a rainbow trout color. I’ve caught lots of little trout on mepps aglias #1or 2 spinners (gold or silver) but more in creeks/rivers and have had luck with spoons in lakes.

Another thing I would try since you don’t fly fish is to bring a clear bubble bobber that you put some water in for weight, and use that to fish a fly- a gnat or mosquito is universal, a renegade or elk hair caddis, maybe a BWO if it’s in the area? Or a hopper if it’s warm and summer.

So many options!

what size panther martins do you suggest?

I spent a decade packing the smallest breakdown ugly stick rod and the smallest reel I could find for <$50 at cabelas. It works great!

In my experience as long as you stay freshwater and don’t play football with it, most reels will be plenty fine. And ugly sticks are plenty durable.

Keep in mind you are backpacking, or keep in mind the type of travel you’re doing. I went cheap partly so that I could just strap the pole to the pack and didn’t have to freak out every time I hit some trees or set the pack down a little too hard. You can also always get/build a case for the rod, many DIY ways online if you google “ultralight rod case for backpacking.”

If you really want top gear take a look at the shimano vanford line of reels.

I just upgraded my backcountry rod to the below, which I have not used but from online chatter seems like the best money you can spend other than jumping to the real fancy business.

For tack - I have always used copper/brass colors to great effect. But I’d get a variety of types and try things out.

I agree with telescoping rods. They work but when it comes to durability they seem not worth their salt. Break down rods are not any more difficult and are much better quality.

When fishing a small creek I would flip a spinner UPSTREAM into a little pocket or side cut then reel it in quick enough to make it spin downstream to me. Fish will hit it fast since it looks like the bait is getting away. You are trying to get a reaction, it’s not bait fishing!

That said, if you really want to catch something bring some worms! or power bait

I have a 4 pc ugly stick pack rod and its okay. Would have done just as well w below:

We been using the ugly stick dock runner - $20 rod & reel from walmart. Works good. I think would be great beaver pond and creek rod for brookies.

Was crappie fishing and old guy caught this gar on it.

If not id grab a cheap 5 or 5-6 2 pc and run with it.

If you need long range casting use a clear float thing you can let water into.

As for lures- get the smallest rapala you can 3 or 5 size. Spinners and spoons work good too.
