If I’m just out for 1 or 2 day hunts I just get TOTM’s which are the smaller sized MRE’s. Calorie dense and a hot meal without having to haul around a burner or stove which offsets the extra weight of the MRE’s. The current menus are pretty good, the ravioli, meatballs in marinara, chicken burrito bowl, chicken noodle soup and chili are better than most of the stuff you would buy in a grocery store. The spinach fettuccine had too much spinach in it for my taste.

So I splurge and buy peak refuel because I personally like them better than mountain house. I then buy bulk from amazon for other stuff like protein bars almonds and I really like the nature valley coconut butter biscuits. (really like the mtn ops ones best but they are pricey so I tend to avoid them) dehydrate my own fruit and make my own jerky. Keeps me around $20 a day

Practically nothing. I do all my own. Dehydrated stew, Chile, or other leftovers, elk jerky/summer sausage, a little oatmeal. Probably the most expensive part is mixed nuts, and I by those in bulk online. Not bringing all the packaging that goes along with the store bought dehydrated meals saves a ton of room, weight, and waste.

Dehydrating food couldn’t be simpler, and I think its way better than freeze dried. Doesn’t plug me up the way mountain house and others do either.

I shoot for 10-15$ a day. If you're buying freeze dry, keep an eye out for sales or on craigslist. I can generally get my freeze dry for 4-5$ if I buy it, but I dehydrate more and more. After that, items are pretty cheap, especially if you buy in bulk.
