We were looking for late summer

Oh, ok. Hunting mule deer during that season will limit the areas where it is practical to hunt. Much of the mule deer habitat in AZ is in the lower elevations which will still be very hot that time of year. If you want to hunt mule deer at that time, I would recommend units 1 or 27, where you can hunt in some higher elevations where it will be cooler, and still have a good chance of finding some mulies.

Just a suggestion...I mean, you can certainly hunt the Kaibab NF (south of the Grand Canyon) or the Coconino NF, but I think mule deer numbers would be somewhat better in the Apache/Sitgreaves NF (White Mountains).

Arizona it Archery only OTC for mule deer. And even then, not all of the units are OTC. Unit 3 A&C, 11M, 12 A&B, and 13 A&B are draw only. The rest of the units have different dates available, when hunting is available. The OTC tag is good like others have said, from Jan-1 through Dec-31. You can only harvest one deer per year. So if you harvest a buck in the January Archery OTC hunt, you're done for the year. Most of the units in AZ have big buck potential, but some more than others.
